Reading the whole bible - one chapter at a time

Genesis III=

1. Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:

3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

8 And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden.

9 And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?

12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.

13 And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

14 And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:

15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;

18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;

19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

20 And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.

21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

22 And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

23 Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.

24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

Notes

1. was it a real serpent that spoke to Eve? Because when god condemns it to go forth on it's belly it sounds like a real snake or at least a snake working with the devil

2. why is having the knoweldge of good and evil and knowing you're naked a bad thing?

3. What did God mean when he said the ground is cursed for man's sake? Has the whole earth been cursed?

4. Why did God not want mankind to live forever after man gained the knowledge of good and evil?

>And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

>inb4 THE SNEKS LOST THEIR LEGS AND PURSUED AN ETERNAL RIVALRY WITH THE HUMANS

Seriously what is it referring to? I've heard it refer to an ethnicity (usually the jews) and an evil priest class (also the jews). What's /christian/'s take?

>1. was it a real serpent that spoke to Eve? Because when god condemns it to go forth on it's belly it sounds like a real snake or at least a snake working with the devil

Serpent is often used as an insult for deceivers in the Bible. A serpent is also put on a stick to heal people in Moses' story. The serpent held a lot of symbolic importance in the area at the time.

>2. why is having the knoweldge of good and evil and knowing you're naked a bad thing?

Ideology is a knowledge of good and evil separate from God and therefore bad.

>3. What did God mean when he said the ground is cursed for man's sake? Has the whole earth been cursed?

Not sure

>4. Why did God not want mankind to live forever after man gained the knowledge of good and evil?

I've heard new agey groups suggest Adam and Eve were spiritual creatures at first but that might be heresy, I'm not sure though.

>16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

Does this mean that prior to partaking of the fruit woman could not reproduce? or that they could do so without conception?

>Does this mean that prior to partaking of the fruit woman could not reproduce?

Really interesting thought. I wonder if this means we wuz like angels n sheit, but I'm worried that might be heretical.

Not to pester or hijack but I've always wanted to read the bible according to Judaic proportional divisions.

According to this the next section is a paragraph that stretches from 4:1-26

A complete listing is found here.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parashah#Torah

So basically the {P} indicates a new paragraph while the {S} a break in the middle of the line, perhaps indictable by simply starting on the following line.

Correctomundo

As in the heresy part.

Why is it heresy though? Do you have a link to any of the church father's thoughts?

If you read the catechism: http://www.vatican.va/archive/ccc_css/archive/catechism/p1s2c1p6.htm

You can see that human beings are created both Flesh and Soul. Now lets look at some specifics in that text:

The human body shares in the dignity of "the image of God": it is a human body precisely because it is animated by a spiritual soul, and it is the whole human person that is intended to become, in the body of Christ, a temple of the Spirit

Now back to the bible:

Genesis 1:27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

Now the human was always the image of god since his creation, and the way God made this image in particular was a mix of body but also spirit. Messing with it the way New Age groups did is dangerously gnostic: To imply that a human without a body is the image of God is similar to hatred of the material. Why else did God create the material world? So we could live in it(Even though we corrupted it and he has to make a new one).

Never mind that the first Jew was Abraham.

In Biblical context jew means a Judean. Abraham was a Hebrew, not a jew. Jesus suggests the people who composed the jews of his time go back to Cain.

“from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all.”

Luke 11:51

In any case, the serpent predated any and all Jews, making he interpretation that the serpent of Eden was a Jew completely silly.

2/ In verse 6 Eve and Adam are already capable of seeing things, so I guess the seeing after they ate the fruit is self-consciousness, and I guess being naked means their defenseless, which means they don't believe GOD to protect and guide them in a way. Plus, violating GOD's commandment there is a sin itself.

3/ Curse the ground could it be the earth? Because heaven and earth are two separate locations/ places. The earth is curse for our sake because they should have died, but now the ground is curse instead, and that opens a path to their (and our) eternal life

4/ Because then they would be the same as GOD

I just want to add also that Adam probably ate the fruit because he love or being persuaded by Eve, notice v6 she gave him and he did eat, despite being told directly by GOD in Genesis 2. And also v17 , Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, that could imply he was persuaded by her

I wouldn’t be so dismissive. Satan could be the proto sneaky sneak before all sneaky sneaks. Sneak is only one letter misplacement away from snake.

Fr. Seraphim Rose gave on this subject. It's about an hour and a half long, but worth the watch if you have the time. One of the interesting things he suggests is that God intended to man to be able to eat the fruit after he had spiritually matured, but because man ate the fruit before he was ready, he was cast out of the garden.

Why did Eve's eyes become "opened" only after Adam ate the fruit?
