The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

How bad am I for reading Easy-to-Read as my first Bible? I have ADD and so KJV just seems too hard for me, but I'm scared that I'm reading a very dumbed-down version of the Bible.

How much am I screwing up?

Most people here are probably gonna disagree with this. But I think any method if getting the good word is great, videos, audio, sermons, etc. As long as you still get the main jist and it leads you down a path to want to study more.

I'm planning on reading it first to get the jist then when I'm done read KJV because it's very hard to understand what's going on in it.

I'm also going to try NIV, but I keep getting the feeling like KJV is the only English-speaking way to read it.

OP, you're doing perfectly fine. As long as you read with the force and power of the Holy Spirit

It doesn't matter anon. The message of the gospel is more important than how flowery the language used. Translation accuracy matters when you get into autistic debates with people of other denominations who use specific translations to justify their doctrine, but if you're just reading the Bible to get to know Jesus then it's far more important to have something you can understand, even if it's something like the Message.

Yeah, I'm far from smart enough to even debate about god. I just want to get my foot in the door.

Give it a fair go. Just remember, it's not the best translation. That goes for other translations you read too. Even ones older than the KJV. Even the KJV itself. It's a humble attitude to have when reading the Bible. Even when looking at the oldest Hebrew and Greek copies we have. Remember, the book isn't the One who saves you. Did Messiah write things down? No, He saved people by word of mouth, although on occasion He would quote the Bible. But he often didn't need to. Don't put your faith in something you already find questionable, whether it be this or another translation. Don't put your faith in any man, or any of his works. Put your faith in the One who is incorruptible, who will help you with the Bible, and with all matters of life.

Also, do not think you are stupid for wanting to understand what the Bible is saying, even though it is hard. Most people don't even try, which is truly unintelligent.

Challenge: Read the Bible in order.

Maybe try the New King James Version, I heard it is easy to understand. Don't worry, as long as you are doing something, you are on the right track

NASB and NLT are legit translations. Save the KJV for your second run through - you’ll pick up more starting with something more contemporary, especially when you read the OT

I do agree that the KJV is ideal and many important details get lost in latwr versions (e.g. “this one can only come out by prayer ABD FASTING) but you have your whole life to iron those out

Be careful. St. Peter warns us:

>As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are certain things hard to be understood, which the unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, to their own destruction. [17] You therefore, brethren, knowing these things before, take heed, lest being led aside by the error of the unwise, you fall from your own steadfastness.

And st. Paul

>[14] Therefore, brethren, stand fast; and hold the traditions which you have learned, whether by word, or by our epistle.

The Bible is supposed to be understood in the context of Tradition as handed to us by the Apostles. If you reject that, whatever version you read, you read and draw your own interpretations at your own peril.
