I expect this will get as many replies as all my other posts (three, and then page 15 out the door two days later), however, I want to give this some context for all you young whipper-snappers and foreigners who've never heard of Bill Hayden much less know what he was about.
He was the Julia of his day, in a way, an avowed leftist and atheist who had no interest in, nor much support for, Christianity. Most effectively atheist pollies tend to stay mum on the topic, and feign some sort of belief, but not Bill. Commo Bill. It was a "thing" in the media, especially when he was made Governor General, just as much was made of Julia Gillard's atheism when she became Prime Minister.
Well, deathbed conversions have a funny way of changing peoples' hearts. He's now a cathbro, asserting that "witnessing so many selfless acts of compassion by Christians over his lifetime, and deep contemplation while recovering from a stroke, that prompted his decision".
(Although, it seems it's less an ardent conversion so much as rejoining the Catholicism he thought he had always been, saying: "I could just feel in my heart that I didn’t feel fulfilled. … There is more to life than just me. I had to make a dedication of myself for the good of others, before God. I felt that strongly.")
>In a letter to family and friends, he explained that the Christian principles of "humanity, social commitment and service to others" aligned with his personal and political values, and guided his return to the Catholic faith. "Christianity represents for me the qualities I have attempted to apply in my life but from now on will strive to uphold, with faith," he wrote.
So, there's hope for Julia, yet.
