The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Why hasn't the Parthenon been rebuilt and reused as a church? It was a Christian church just as long a time span as it was a pagan temple, and was even a major pilgrimage center in the Byzantine Empire.

The moderns would riot about the destruction of history. I'd like it though.

Pretty much this, to do such a thing is to run into the same (((enemies))) of Christendom you'll encounter if you try to do something good anywhere. I'm skeptical of how much excess funding the Greek government has to throw at a quality restoration of such a scale atm as well.

But I never knew that it was used as a church. Why is there no Christian /his/ thread for little known Christian history like this? It would be a nice diversion from the same 5-10 bait/politics/blogpost template threads we seem to cycle through.

The Parthenon was never used as a temple, it was built as votive offering.

or is I should say

I would say that the Parthenon is more valuable to Christianity as it is. People go there and they see dust. It shows Hellenism as dead and buried. Let it remain Athena's grave site.

You should fear the reprisals of your attitude.

Reprisals from whom? Worshipers of Athena?

Considering the rate at which churches are declining all the while temples such as this are being restored, you shouldn't feel too confident.

Destroying things like fanatic cattle is not something to be proud of.

774680  No.692495

>>692447

But the Parthenon, even if restored for archaeological purposes, will not be a place of pagan devotion. Neither am I advocating destroying the monuments of the past, quite the opposite. It is the grave site of a religion, I would no more advise its destruction than I would tip a headstone or dynamite a mausoleum.

Lul nice deflection, there's no telling where it may lead, and considering the growth of Hellenic religion it may happen.

It had actually been preserved until Venetian destruction.

Lmao.

Icelanders managed to rebuild one temple, and now you think we are in some massive pan-european temple revival?

If by Hellenic religion you mean paganism (it's not, the Hellenic religion is Orthodoxy) then i can assure you that it's definitely not growing at all. There was indeed something like a revival in 2000 till 2010 but it died overnight. In fact, the rediscovering of Orthodoxy is more on trend today. Makes sense if you consider what the country has being through.

As for the Parthenon, i too would love to see it used as a church again. It could be an alive symbol of Hellenic continuity* rather than an exibit for tourists that it is now. But for the moment i don't believe it is posible.

*Pic related: Athena's temple, the white parts, now turned in a monastery dedicated to Theotokos.

Atheistfag here.

I always get sad when I learn about all those churches and cathedrals getting converted in to mosques in what is now the muslim world.

>growth of Hellenic religion

The worship of Greek gods today is like the modern worship of the Norse gods. A bunch of tryhard edgelords without the resolve for actual atheism and middle-aged businessmen trying to 'reconnect with their heritage' or some spurious midlife crisis bullshit like that.

There was probably ever only like one temple there to begin with.
