When I read that book I too was conflicted with the way the Jews acted, such as the killing of the antagonist's sons despite me seeing no account of their crimes or the fact that Jews were given legal rights by the King to kill thousands of their enemies inside the kingdom. Also when I read that Mordecai didn't bow down to Haman I saw that as pride on Mordecai's part. Nonetheless, I didn't live in that time and I am likely to be wrong in my opinion of these events.
My understanding is that not everything written in the book of Esther is endorsed by God, just like Solomon marrying many wives wasn't endorsed by God.
