The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Can you tell me a little about unforgivable sins? If in my past I turned people away from God or if I said some nasty things about God am I wrong in assuming I'm just screwed now?

Yes, you are wrong.

Only unforgivable thing is to blaspheme the Holy Spirit, which is basically…well…rejecting the forgiveness.

The only truly unforgivable sin is the one you don't want to or refuse to admit to or atone for, because by this you signal to the Lord that you don't care about His Mercy and therefore deny yourself salvation. This is what it is to sin against the Holy Spirit.

If you are feeling repentant, that's a good sign, but you must follow it up by confessing your sins.

>rejecting the forgiveness

Sorry, I guess I'm a brainlett. I'm not sure what that means.

Would you say it's my responsibility to bring the people I told to stray from God back? Not that I had some sort of mass influence but I often argued in opposition to faith.

It means final impenitence. Going to hell is the unforgiveable sin.

Sort of. We are supposed to spread the Gospel as much as we can by word and deed anyway.

If you feel it would be worthwhile recanting what you said to others to try to bring them back (if in particular there was a case where you said something to cause someone to actually abandon the faith), then I would tentatively suggest trying it. Balancing out your sins with an opposite penance is a commendable practise (i.e. if you stole something, you could give it back or donate to charity, for example).

Don't take our word for it though, consult your priest on what might be advisable.

I think it would be nice to at least talk to them about it.

Not that your faith is dependant on their faith because of your past, but it can be a good training and experience. Which does not mean it will be pleasurable, most likely you will feel horrible afterwards.

Augustine [Fulgentius] (De Fide ad Petrum iii) says that "those who despair of pardon for their sins, or who without merits presume on God's mercy, sin against the Holy Ghost," and (Enchiridion lxxxiii) that "he who dies in a state of obstinacy is guilty of the sin against the Holy Ghost," and (De Verb. Dom., Serm. lxxi) that "impenitence is a sin against the Holy Ghost," and (De Serm. Dom. in Monte xxii), that "to resist fraternal goodness with the brands of envy is to sin against the Holy Ghost," and in his book De unico Baptismo (De Bap. contra Donat. vi, 35) he says that "a man who spurns the truth, is either envious of his brethren to whom the truth is revealed, or ungrateful to God, by Whose inspiration the Church is taught," and therefore, seemingly, sins against the Holy Ghost.

God is within you. The only unforgivable sin you have to worry about is to reject asking for forgiveness. On the cross Jesus allowed the man into heaven who asked him to forgive his sins. It can be very hard especially if you turned your back on the Lord but remember St. Peter who denied knowing the Lord 3 times was told to lead the Church after Christ and St. Paul who condemned many Saints to death was forgiven by the Lord.

Yep after asking forgiveness is the hardest because you begin to recognize your sins and identify them. Take it easy because going in to zealously like I did a year ago will only take you back the way you came and you'll end up steeped in sin again.

I don't suppose you have to go that far anon, but you would be wise to repent before them. That is to say, tell them that you're a Christian now.

This is the most humble thing you could do, because it lays your fallibility completely bare. It will be tough to do this, but at least you will not have led anyone astray, they will doubt your judgement more in the future, but if you love the Truth, you wouldn't want them to accept your judgement on face value anyway.

Just confess and your sins will be forgiven. I should do it too…
