I'm not sure where you're getting that term from, Galatians 6:16 calls it the Israel of God, which I think best shows the distinction, because there could have been an Israel according to the flesh (Romans 9:3-4) but not as far as God is concerned. I only care about who God considers to be Israel because that is the only point of view that matters.

You have to ask what it means to be protected by God. Of course this would be absurd, so the protection is not physical, but rather spiritual.
