All you need to know is that Jesus meant what he said; if there are two possibilities for the meaning of a verse, the simplest one is most likely to be correct, usually the one that is simply taking the verse at face value.

when you approach the bible and Christianity you should do it with a humble heart and mind, eager to learn and admit mysteries when you encounter them; yes there are verses you won't understand and concepts foreign to you, and people more knowledgeable than you, yes you can misinterpret and misunderstand and yes you should seek guidance outside the text. No it does not and will not ever "interpret itself"
