This is one of the major reasons I personally have a problem with neo-classical/baroque artwork, especially that depicting the Crucifixion.
When we look at at a crucifix or an image of the Crucifixion, we often see a very much sanitised version of the ordeal Our Lord went through, with the Lord being tastefully modelled like some Greek marble icon like an Adonis or an Apollo, and with only a discreet amount of bloodshed or violence, with a light amount of ecstasy in His eyes, when in fact he probably looked more like picture related at this point, struggling to breath, writhing in agony and defaced beyond recognition. Basically, it infantilises His sacrifice and makes it look more like some odd pageant than the redemptive offering that it actually was, and seeks to appease the eyes and senses of the delicate, lest they remember how it actually happened.
Maybe if it were more often depicted as Gibson depicted it, fags like the OP would think twice and more seriousoly about His sacrifice.
