Atheist here, I'm not here to "debate" Christianity or anything like that I've recently become genuinely curious about Christianity. I've considered myself a Christian from childhood to my mid-teens but I didn't understand theology or anything I was really just a Christian because that's what my family and most everyone around me believed. Not too long ago I became a Marxist materialist and my interest in the Ontology Question is really what sparked my interest in Christianity. However the question of Hell has really bothered me.

The common conception of Hell is that Hell is a place where non-believers are tortured for all eternity. To me however this seems incompatible with the loving god of the New Testament and is more akin to a sadistic god. So I ask you what are the various churches' views on Hell? What are your personal views on it? Is it truly eternal? Is it all that bad? Fill me in here

Pic absolutely unrelated

Wew lad

>To me however this seems incompatible with the loving god of the New Testament and is more akin to a sadistic god

What it is akin to is a just God. Everyone in hell absolutely deserves their punishment. The only reason anyone objects to eternal conscious torment is they have a deficient sense of justice.

cool.

it's eternal, and it's unimaginable how terrible it is.

>And if your eye causes you to fall into sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell, where ‘their worm never dies, and the fire is never quenched.’

the reason Hell is terrible is because the chief punishment of hell is eternal separation from God, in whom alone man can possess the life and happiness for which he was created and for which he longs. That is the chief torment of Hell. and everyone who goes to Hell, chooses to go to hell.

>loving god of the New Testament and is more akin to a sadistic god.

God is infinitely just, while we are wicked evil creatures made by God. We hide to ourselves our deeds so we can live without a heavy conscience and continue our destructive and selfish acts. But God is infinitely merciful and mercy laughs in the face of justice, all we need to do is repent and believe on Christ and we will accept God's mercy He gives freely.

If you offend a stranger it's Ron, if you offend your father who begat and raised you then it's worse, and if you offend your Father in heaven who loves you infinitely from eternity, who created you, who sustains your existence every moment, who bears your insults every day patiently so that you might repent, who sent His only Son so that He could die to redeem you yet you ignored Him so you could do some vanity you won't care about the next day, what punishment do you deserve?

>infinitely just

>creates evil

Whoa there

Also which denomination is Annihilationism in because I always figure that was a more likely Hell. Infinite punishment for finite wrongdoing isn’t just: however, if a being sustains you and you deny/offend him, it’s totaly just for them to just stop supporting your existence

It may seem really confusing until I found this video explaining it. You have to understand, all humans throughout time are descendants of Satan. Everyone is born with this, there is no way to live without this "Original Sin" being there, except through accepting Jesus Christ.

That is why nonbelievers and other religions will go to Hell, they are still have a piece of Satan in them and they will all go back to him in his kingdom of the damn.

You aren't a free-willed person, you are born with something evil in you and need to remove it

Maybe you should focuse on understanding what is paradise (I mean sanctity, God) because it will help you to understand what it's not : after all hell is just absence of God, privation of paradise for the sake of your own pride/egoism.

Also if you genuinely seek truth and love God won't unjustly punish you. He know your conscience, now it's up to you to be clear about it.

Not that lad, but I see where you got confused.

God didn't make us evil and wicked. It is true we are sinful, and it is true he made us, but God didn't make us to be sinful. It is through our free will that we commit sin.

Our free will can either be used in a positive way, that is, to love God. Or we can choose to separate ourselves from him by sinning.

Othodoxy at least views it as a state of soul, rather than a place

You can read works of St. Isaac on Nineveh for example:

Also, book related by Alexandros Kalomiros

Hell might seem unfair to you, but you're hardly the judge of all the earth, so your personal opinions don't amount to much. Don't you think that your personal understanding of justice might be at least a little deficient on a cosmic scale? Are you simply saying you don't believe in Hell because you don't want to believe in it? That's wishful thinking. Obviously Hell exists or doesn't exist regardless of your feelings on the matter, or the feelings of any mere human. The question isn't about what you want to believe. It's about what is. The supernatural world isn't a manifestation of your opinions any more than the natural world is (or the social world I'll add, since I'm talking to an ideologue who is apparently so indignant toward the idea of an otherworldly Hell that he'll happily pursue an ideology that seeks to usher into being a worldly Hell). If you want to find out the answer to your question you need to find people who have experience of the supernatural world and the historians and commentators who have collected and analyzed the recorded wisdom of such people. There you would find out whether Hell exists or not. To save you some time, if you examine the orthodox Christian tradition starting with the works of Moses and proceeding to Revelation and the Church Fathers and beyond, you will find that the fact of the existence of Hell has been revealed to humanity by the prophets of God as well as Jesus Himself and is a core doctrine of the traditional and Protestant churches. So that's their view. And there you are with yours.

First of all, welcomr, and its good to hear you're interested in our wares.

A concept that really helped me understand why we have Hell is the idea of there being no evil, only the absence of good. Hell is the metaphysical realm of that absence; it's a pit into the void whereas the Kingdom of Heaven shines bright in the skies. Passion is so rampant that their 'real world' ramifications are amplified to obscenity, whereas in Heaven it holds no such weight over us.

God is a jealous god in the old sense of the word. We are his children, his greatest creation, and it hurts him to see us fall again and again, but despite all our shortcomings he loves us unconditionally, and always lends an ear or a hand to help us in our trials. He wants us to do right, but he also doesn't want to infringe on our free will; it is very much in his power to remove all sin and devastation we have wrought, but we have to take responsibility and play our part in the salvation of ourselves and all of mankind.
