The Passion of the Christ was based on two (or five, depending on how you look at it) sources: the four Passion accounts of the Evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John; and Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich’s Dolourous Passion vision. I assume Gibson is going to continue the rule of “scripture and accepted visions” for his movies, but his new movie is going to depict the harrowing of Hell, which isn’t something deeply covered in The Bible. Looking into Emmerich, she only had visions on the Passion and the life of the Virgin, she didn’t have any visions of the harrowing of Hell. Does anyone know what this new movie is based on? Has Gibson said anything on this? Alternatively, are there any famous visions of the harrowing that this movie will take reference from?

There will be cameos of past villians in hell, like Cell, Frieza and Walt Disney.

NO BLACKS in hell also, since they are SUPERIOR beings.

It wasn’t even that long an OP, you could have read it pretty quickly…

OP, I don’t know what he’s basing it on, I’ve been wondering that.

The Harrowing of Hell is something touched upon by scripture, the church fathers, and the liturgy. You can find lots of documents. Pic related is a good overview of what has been written from the Orthodox perspective.

From the bible, we have St. Paul on the spirits in prison, the parable of the strong man which is commonly thought to be a reference to the harrowing, and (since Orthodox typically view all of the bible through the lens of Christ) Jonah's speech from inside the whale which is often thought to be the words of Christ himself in Hades.

I know there are tidbits in scripture, I just mean that it's not enough to make a narrative film based on what's in scripture. Are there any long visions of the Harrowing that could make a full movie?

St. Ephrem of Syria wrote extensively on the matter in his poetry.

I think perhaps Mel might use St. Augustine's writings on the matter?

Occult teachings and imagination. You can't be in hollywood and produce big budget movies without some kabbalah stuff.

This movie is being produced by Mel Gibson, there is no fear of kike-ish kabbalah stuff in his movies

How does he get away with it? Surely the studios and production companies must make him compromise to a degree.

After he got fuck you money, he started an independent production company. The Passion is not just the highest grossing foreign language movie of all time, it’s also one of the highest grossing indie movies ever made
