Can I have a basic rundown about Gideons International ?

They gave pic related to my brother, it's quite nice to be honest.

What are their motives ? Can they be trusted ?

It's just the NT + Psalms, however what's bothering my family (they're all atheists) is that they give them to minor after school.

Only Bibles you can trust are the Hebrew, Greek and Latin versions, given you are fluent in one of those languages.

I would love to learn either Greek or Latin, but I've heard Greek is much harder to learn if you don't know some basic of Latin (Might be utmost bullshit tho)

Gideons are a bunch of Christian men in business that hands out Bibles. Of course they're going to be bothered if they're atheists.

If you are really intent on studying The Bible thouroughly, it would be worth it, given you can spare the time.

In any case, there are many (un)intended mistranslations in several translations accross multiple languages and it is important for a Christian to be aware that they exist, in case something seems too ridiculous or contradictory, you should look up the original manuscript to get a proper picture. I think it is not a necessity if a Christian is satisfied and able to strengthen his faith with what is written in the translations, but those who are skeptical might turn away from faith if there is one or several inconsistencies that bother him, lest results in many fedoras/agnostics/nihilists.

protie propaganda Bible. Don't know the exact english translation but when I read it in my native language instead of "Mary full of Grace" it read something like "enveloped by grace"

Gideons gave me my first Bible on uni and it was the start of my conversion

Thats such a minor thing that 99% of people will skip over, to call the Bible "protie propaganda"

Some of us have been there and carry the burden of our repentance and still don't feel like it is enough of how sorry we are. When I was still in school, surprisingly many classmates took the New Testament. After class, they just left it there on the table or straight up threw it into the trash; I think I did the latter or gave it to my mom.

Here's a basic rundown: Gideon International is one of the good third great awakening groups. (In America, there have been certain periods of time where people suddenly got excited for Christianity again. Those are called the great awakenings. The third great awakening took place between the late 1800s and early 1900s.) The third great awakening was mostly a mistake, as it led to a bunch of heretical groups being formed such as the Jehovah's Witnesses, Christian Science, and the New Thought movement. However, it had a lot of good aspects as well. The major good aspect of the great awakening was the formation of new groups (not denominations) that aimed to spread charity, goodwill, and to evangelize. Groups like this that formed were the Salvation Army, the YMCA, Gideon International. The goal of Gideon International is to give Bibles to as many people as they can, entirely for free. Their most famous act is giving away Bibles in hotel rooms, but they also do street giveaways, prison ministries, and they used to give Bibles to school students before the supreme court told them not to. They run by donations and volunteers, and their Bibles are entirely for free.

The translations they use are not denominationally biased in an extreme way. They lean protestant, but not so much that a Catholic or Orthodox couldn't use them. (It's not like they're giving out NWTs). In fact, the New King James Version is the most common Bible in use for Orthodox Christians, and the NKJV is the English Bible the Gideons give away. Their motives are completely pure, and their Bibles can absolutely be trusted.

I brought they bible to my priest once and he said it's protestant and pointed to a specific verse as proof. Don't remember which verse exactly, it was long time ago.

The pocket Gideons that I've seen around are pretty much just the KJV, NKJV, NIV (I rarely see), and the ESV translations of the NT. Interesting thing with the more recent ESV versions is that Crossway gave Gideons permission to "include certain alternate readings based on the Textus Receptus."

I haven't seen any with certain-leaning theological notes. Closest thing is just some suggested verses to read usually found in the insets. They're safe IMO, and are probably one of the only companies that publish such a conveniently 3 x 5 inch sized pocket NT.

Every day I carry a Bible that the Gideons gave me once, mostly to serve as a tactile reminder that I should follow what I've read in it. It's KJV and I received it in high school in the US and I was given the larger one, a New International Version, when I studied in England and I had the most pleasant conversation with that man. It was 4 years ago now and I still think of him from time to time, so my experiences with the Gideons have been extremely pleasant ones.

Grace is unmerited blessing. However you phrase it, all it means is that Mary received blessing through no merit of her own.

31eb22 No.596255

I carry a pocket size gideon's nt in my backpack, as well as another one in my duffle bag when I travel and don't bring my regular bible for whatever reason. They're both NKJV. I seldom use them but I like to have a bible with me at all times.

I also really like that they have John 3:16 in a bunch of languages in the first few pages of each one so that even if they can't read most of it pretty much anyone can read that verse and possibly be drawn to find Christ in their own tongue.

I'm sure their Bibles can be trusted, but saying they "lean Protestant" is an understatement. The requirements to become a Gideon require you to be a member of an evangelical church and even have the pastor of said church vouch for you.

To be fair, the same could be said for any accurate Bible translation.

The organisation as a whole is definitely Protestant. From the FAQ:

"[All Gideons must] Be members in good standing in their Protestant/evangelical churches."

But they normally just use standard translations, rather than some specific propaganda translation; apparently whatever is most widely "acceptable" to native speakers generally (https://www.quora.com/Which-translation-of-the-Bible-does-the-Gideons-International-distribute)

In English that normally means the NKJV or the ESV.

Apparently in French it's typically the "Louis Segond, Nouvelle Édition de Genève 1979" which was translated by a Protestant as well, but other than that I know nothing about.
