By non-overt, I mean movies that aren’t based on Bible stories or famous historical saints/figures, but contain Christian themes and/or were made by practicing Christians

Pic related. It was made by Bob Dylan long after his conversion to Christianity. The film deals with both totalitarianism and anarchy, and the effects of both. A common theme is the idea of God turning his back on a nation, and where God’s place is in an increasingly chaotic world. It’s set in United States which is in the midst of a civil war, and is controlled by a Latin American-styled dictatorship. It centers around a benefit concert being put on by sleazebags from a government controlled network. Definitely worth a watch

This is a movie popular with Catholics. It’s about a man named Hazel Motes, who starts his own anti-religion church to repress his later religious feelings. He encounters a pastor who pretends to have blinded himself, and the film has an interesting contrast between the false faith of the pastor and the false non-faith of Motes. It has a really strange ending, but I’d recommend it to anybody

This ones gonna be more controversial. Anthony Burgess is a Christian, and A Clockwork Orange was meant as a story about morality, repentance, and free-will. The last chapter was removed from American versions, and as such the movie doesn’t adapt it. However, I think many of the Christian elements, such as the theme of individual soul liberty, the fact that the evil main character is a blasphemer, or the characterization of the clergyman as the only truly moral character, shine through. That being said, I know a lot would disagree on this point. Some would say it’s a good movie that doesn’t have Christian themes, and some would say it’s just a bad movie that glorifies sex and violence. Idk, you take from it what you want

Last one so this thread isn’t just old movies and obscure movies. Tolkien and Lewis were both Christians, and their works are some of the last great Christian writings. The movies are Hollywood productions, and lose some of the charm of the books, but they’re still pretty good

good movie, but being unironically pacifist during war is retarded and cuckish.

if all the troops were pacifist the enemy would be stacking their kids in piles and smashing their women each night.

disgusting tbh, and a sad misreading of the Bible and Christ's message

3cff09 No.593870

>>593663

No, no, no…I read the book first and watched the movie. Disappointed: the message is distorted.Shusaku's book is about human failures, and God's love still being above all even in our fall. The moral of the movie is too often: be a Christian if you like, but just keep it to yourself. The literal message is: keep God confined to yourself, and, thus, into your churches, and let Him not go outside of these confinements. This is a deeply wrong and false message, as we must act and speak always with Christ in our actions, deeds, words.

I had hopes for this movie, but knowing Scorsese, a man who entered seminary and then left to fulfill a career as a director and sadly a servant of Hollywood as a result, I feared it would wind up becoming something like what we got in the end.

>>593740

I think in this case he would be "the exception which confirms the rule"; I am conflicted about the message of this movie, in all honesty: there are some good values, but we also know that there's a time for the sword too.

>>593685

No, this is a terrible movie…I liked some scenes, I liked some characters, but the message it conveys is terribly anti-Christian and it's still there even when looked at it "ironically"…also, I am tired of Italians being always portrayed as mobsters.

Same. Especially considering just how Jewish and anti-Italian the mafia is and has always been. Also, even at it's height, the mafia only had a small percentage of Italians counted as members (and this percentage has only dropped more and more lately).

>This is a movie popular with Catholics.

It is a really good movie, though. Well acted and blackly humourous.

Fun fact - the director John Huston was an atheist who had the theme of the movie backwards, believing that it was about Motes being a rebel free thinker who wanted to get people to break out of their religious quackery by preaching muh facts and logic to them, but he was ultimately overcome by their innate idiocy. It wasn't until filming was nearly finished that he discovered he was actually completely wrong.

Also, picture related. I'm not even kidding.

>“But I say to you that if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be liable to judgment; and if you insult a brother or sister, you will be liable to the council; and if you say, ‘You fool,’ you will be liable to the hell of fire.”

>“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer.”

>“For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

>“Do not judge, so that you may not be judged. For with the judgment you make you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get.”

you sound like you set great store by earthly life, and wear your faith as a cultural garb and not in your heart. I was once like this. Please study again the message of Christ as be as he was.

Been a while since I've thought about this movie/book. I remember writing an essay about it back in school about how Alex was a portrayal of a Nietzche's ubermensch but never made the Christian connection until now.

a0672c No.596877

I think the book throws a much more obvious light on it's Christian themes, not just because the movie omits the last chapter of the book. There's a lot of little passages here and there throughout that get missed, as happens in most film adaptations.
