If capital punishment is moral and should be enforced, in some situations, how are sinners supposed to be saved?

Gen 9:6 “Whoever sheds human blood, by humans shall their blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made mankind."

Yet 1 Timothy 2:4 God wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.

How is a sinner supposed to get saved if a judge decides to end his life prematurely? Similarly how is a regular person, a seeker, supposed to be saved if their life is cut short by a murderer's axe before they can convert?

That's why the Byzantines preferred mutilation and exile over capital punishment.

More seriously… Death sentence isn't intrinsically evil, but it's far from ideal for the reasons you're highlighting. We Westerners live in a society comfortable enough that giving the death sentence to criminals left and right isn't the most merciful and loving option available.

Also, the Noahide commandments must be understood in light of Christ. They were given to a humanity that was fallen. The full realization of humanity is in Christ, and He clearly abolishes the law of talion.

In a fair judicial system, convicts are given time to repent before facing their crimes instead of being marched straight to the gallows as with a show trial. I really don't see anything wrong with someone being convicted of a capital crime and then being executed for it a month later if they are provided access to a chaplain, are administered last rites, etc. as all Christian countries ought and on the most part have to my knowledge. Indeed, all men should hear the Gospel, particular one whose days are numbered, and Christians no matter the denomination are generally very good about being active in the prison system.

Is the executioner right in the eyes of the Lord for killing a man who has repented?

>How is a sinner supposed to get saved if a judge decides to end his life prematurely?

Because it doesn't work with the judge sentencing them like "I sentence you to death, but I'm not gonna tell you when lolol".

In Catholic countries or countries with strong Catholic presence, on the night before the execution of the condemned, a priest would go in and spend the whole night with the inmate, soliciting them for contrition, pardon and confession, then providing them with last rites, so that they could at least die in a state of grace. In this respect it's probably one of the greatest spiritual luxuries you can have because

1. You know exactly when you are to die

2. You have a priest with you to hear confession and to ask him to ask for forgiveness of your victims, and for his prayers for your soul

3. You get to offer up your death-agony and fulfil your temporal punishment for sin

4. You can die in a state of grace

Compare this with how many souls at that time on the outside would be dying in a real unprovided for death.

We really need to have a "read the catechism" thread, like I get mistakes like these and I've done the same but they need to be corrected all the same.

http://www.vatican.va/archive/ccc_css/archive/catechism/p3s2c2a5.htm

>Assuming that the guilty party's identity and responsibility have been fully determined, the traditional teaching of the Church does not exclude recourse to the death penalty, if this is the only possible way of effectively defending human lives against the unjust aggressor. If, however, non-lethal means are sufficient to defend and protect people's safety from the aggressor, authority will limit itself to such means, as these are more in keeping with the concrete conditions of the common good and more in conformity to the dignity of the human person. Today, in fact, as a consequence of the possibilities which the state has for effectively preventing crime, by rendering one who has committed an offense incapable of doing harm - without definitely taking away from him the possibility of redeeming himself - the cases in which the execution of the offender is an absolute necessity "are very rare, if not practically nonexistent."

I can't speak for other countries but in the US the multiple trials and excessive lawyering necessary to put someone on death row are exponentially higher than the cost of a life sentence, and even if that wasn't the case it wouldn't be necessary to execute criminals.

They're on a death sentence, is it possible to assume that they were ever in a good frame of mind? The only thing left to think about is death and afterlife. There's a documentary series called "On Death Row" that looks into this a little, I think it's worth a watch.

Whoever awaits capital punishment has time to repent and a priest to confess to. Pardoning unbelievers is long outdated too, you can buy a Bible everywhere in the world, Muslims/Jews who get killed wouldn't have converted were they left alive, and converting under duress is worthless anyway.
