Catholicism in particular because it has the unique visuals and audios like uniforms (priests, nuns, monks clothes), pictures, LATIN, Gregorian chant, incense, the mass and, until recently, there was an established Imperial Roman fascismo Arditi vibe . Nowadays, I'd invite any Japanese lady or gent to go to a mainstream Catholic Church and see how outdated their perception of Catholicism is. It's way more modern, and under Francis, more gay and transgender friendly than a fundamental Baptist church. Times have changed.

Catholicism has high curb appeal, thousands of years of interesting and often crazy history to draw on and the most exposure and history in Japan. That said, however, adversarial institutions that are essentially dead ringers for Catholicism are also a staple of Japanese pop fiction - particularly in video games - and more often than not, the presence of Christianity is just window dressing or a cheat sheet for a character. Anderson from Hellsing is a good example; he's a priest because it gives him a ready-made set of motivations, behavior patterns and expectations for his character as well as a ton of edgy and serious-sounding shit to say and for no other reason. He really doesn't have much of an identity outside of "I am angry. ANGRY ABOUT VAMPIRES." but opposing the unholy comes with the territory of being a priest anyway and doing so with magic swords comes with the territory of action manga.

When spoopy Japanese entities are the focus of a series or when said entities have no real geographical affiliation then you'd be a fool to bet against the "cleric"-type character either being affiliated with Shinto or Buddhism or being a D&D-derived "servant of of the god of light" in settings with a more western flavor.

Well, it definitely is. As in, they are treated as sinners that should be welcomed and helped to repent, not as redundant subhumans.
