Isn't it redundant to bless them? why do some Orthodox traditions do this?

Blessing is a synonym of thanking someone according to 1 chronicles 29:10-13 . I am not sure why you would thank a inanimate object.

They're normally written while in continuous prayer, often by clergy or members of religious orders. You can bless them to someone's use, but I'd say the blessing is innate from the means of their creation.

Not sure why you'd think it's redundant. While it is true that they are written in constant prayer, I have them blessed no matter what, because that's what my spiritual father advises me to do. I don't know of anyone who would say otherwise but in my opinion and the opinion of my spiritual father you should always have items for personal devotion (icons, prayer ropes, etc.) blessed

Then burn all your family photos, ESPECIALLY those that have died. I can't stand to see Baptist families have these photos of relatives who died in Iraq, 9/11 or some other "disaster" they justify for their ancestor/pagan worship.

Why is it redundant? Without blessing they are unsanctified objects. With blessing they are sanctified objects. Blessing is a powerful

cb47ac No.586331

>>586328

Because the image leads us to the prototype, it is already sanctified in itself. An icon is also a "material" prayer, which already makes it holy.

>>586238

I always assume that the icons I buy were blessed… Do you think I should bless them myself just in case anyway?

cb47ac No.586334

>>586331

Or maybe go straight to getting them blessed by a priest? But that sounds like just bothering them over a trivial matter.

>buy it blessed

That's a thing? I dunno, I would just buy the icon normally and ask your spiritual father/priest about having them blessed. If he says it isn't necessary, then just go about your own way. If he says to get them blessed, then let him bless them. Heck, I'm pretty sure there's a section in the Liturgion about blessing items. This is the only advice I can give you.

I get banned for gnostic posting and these Prots get free reign. Mods, if you want to ban gnostics then you should ban these Prots as there is an undeniable gnostic stench that animates their rotten spirits. Everything from their iconoclasm, their irreverence or even outright mockery of God's mother, their scorched earth view of man's position in relation to creation, and even their views on government from theonomy to total seperation of church and state all point to the same gnostic error.

I was just given an icon as a gift, what do I do with it? I have it on top of a bookshelf with a few other things I was given at church over the past year or so, is that proper? I'm not yet Orthodox but soon will start the process of begoming.

You really aren't doing the "protestants just make themselves God and the ultimate authority" meme any favors
