Objectively, yes. It's just low fantasy War of the Roses with every character that has remotely some amount of goodness or is beloved by fans dying.

1) Haven't read LotR/Only watched the Peter Jackson films

2) Have awful taste in literature.

The world isn't interesting, there is nothing original about it. Westeros is England, and Essos is just a charicature of what your average liberal thinks slavery was like.

The characters are even worse because, as you say, only the cruelest and edgy can succed, with the ones dying.

They like it because it's not an idealistic fantasy. It's grounded because of how the characters don't have plot armor, anything bad is capable of happening to them regardless of the personality they have. No dumb retcons like them being miraculously revived either.

That said, the novelty wears off because it drags on for several seasons. It lost the tension and suspense because you're aware that it's a series where dark edgy shit happens to everyone.

It certainly isn’t Christian in the slightest, and even the entertainment quality steadily declines after the first season.

And your mention of R'hllor reminds me of other thing that I hate in this: There is no good religion.

R'hllor is basically Satan mixed with Manicheism, The Seven are a polytheistic charicature of the Christian Church of the middle ages, and the Old Gods areNew Age paganism like Wicca. Also the drowned god is VIKANGZ STRONK.

OP, I too dislike this show. It rips your heart out and plays with it considering the plot. I stopped watching after season 5. Almost every character that i was previously rooting for was dead and I began to wonder why I was watching it in the first place.

That's why I lost interest after the first few seasons lol. It started to feel like a satirical parody where you could predict any bad event happening.

It really is ridiculous. When finally the good guys are beggining to organize and strike back, when finally there is a glimpse of hope that things could get better they are killed because Bad Guy #6 made a plan with bad guy #7 and #3 a generation ago and kills them.

I think this obssesion with grimdark on the modern age is a very bad thing. I dont mean a setting that is grimdark but the characters are good and can make a difference, no matter how small. That would be Warhammer 40k, especially Ciaphas Cain. I mean grimdark for the sake of grimdark.

I don't think it makes people depressed, just that it makes people look for other alternative lifestyles that aren't depicted negatively in the show. Probably a bad thing in CY+2 though.

Vikings is far, far better than this show.

I've read the GRRM books and they're not that bad, but nothing to write home about either. The show didn't really do them justice especially in the later seasons.
