https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Most_Holy_Synod

>The Most Holy Governing Synod (Russian: Святейший Правительствующий Синод) was the highest governing body of the Russian Orthodox Church between 1721 and 1918 (when the Church re-instated the Patriarchate). The jurisdiction of the Most Holy Synod extended over every kind of ecclesiastical question and over some partly secular matters.

>Peter I of Russia established the Synod on January 25, 1721 in the course of his church reform. Its establishment was followed by the abolition of the Patriarchate. The Synod was composed partly of ecclesiastical persons, partly of laymen appointed by the Tsar. Members included the Metropolitans of Saint Petersburg, Moscow and Kiev, and the Exarch of Georgia. Originally, the Synod had ten ecclesiastical members, but the number later changed to twelve.

Sounds absolutely anathema. How was this dealt with by the rest of Orthodoxy?

An autocephalus church can organize itself, the Ecumenical Patriarch isn't the Pope

>the Ecumenical Patriarch isn't the Pope

But the Tsar is?

One would think something like the current Jerusalem/Antioch conflict over a single diocese in Qatar would be small potatoes compared to a Tsar deciding to pull a Henry VIII and usurping an entire patriarchal see. And that was enough to trigger a break of communion.

Worldly powers will always attack the Church, just as Christ said they would. The question is: did the worldly powers, in this case the Tsar, succeed in changing the teachings of the Church (Doctrine)? The answer is no, therefore it's not comparable to Henry VIII's break with Rome.
