Hello, my friends. I'm a believer who is not yet settled on a denomination. I've been reading the Bible, but I can't help but feel that something's been lost in my approach to it. I don't feel as though I have the background knowledge and context to really understand and apply the knowledge within. I can't find much online other than children's books that paraphrase the Bible, or study Bibles from a specific denomination. Is there some (relatively) universal companion to the Bible that you would recommend to me to develop a deeper understanding of the Good Word?

I've included this picture because it's the sort of thing I'm looking for. While these books explore the concept of faith in-depth, I'm looking for a book specifically about the Bible.

The Philokalia is seen as a sort of "tritocanon" or rather an "extended canon" to the Bible in Eastern Orthodoxy. There's always that. It's also up for like 2 dollars on Kindle.

If you want more precise commentary on each book of the Bible, this might be of interest: http://www.orthodoxchristianity.net/forum/index.php?topic=39942.0

I don't know any. One bit of advice I can give you is that the second, third time you read through, you'll start to see the different references and companion texts within scripture; New Testament authors quoting passages from the prophets, Old Testament pictures of Christ, etc.

Please never ever ever use this term ever again. Some collection of various saints writings not formalized until centuries after the latest ecumenical councils can never ever ever be compared to the collection of all divinely breathed literature delivered finally to the holy apostles and canonized by the early Church universally

I would recoomend only teading the King James Bible and not any books about it. Especially don't if you haven't read the whole Bible once yet.

2pet3:16

>As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

that seems dangerous my friend

Acts 20:32

>And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.
