Is it sinful to enjoy a beer or two alone at night and read/watch movies, provided it isn't an everyday sort of thing?

72fc34 No.581107

nope. as long as you don't even really get buzzed, technically there's no sin at all.

st. benedict mandated his monks cap out their daily wine drinking to 3 cups, and even Our Lord drank wine (this is why His enemies accused Him of being a glutton and a drunkard)

0ad252 No.581114

What wrong with a beer or two? Just because something is sinful in excess doesn't mean it's sinful in healthy amounts, like gluttony versus eating regularly.

I don't think it's necessarily sinful, but I do think it's unwise to drink alone.

I agree with this guy: I'd call it more of a bad habit which can become a vice and thus lead you to sin…but: if you are in full control of your appetite and you do not crave a drink every night, I'd say it's okay. Not good nor virtuous, but not a sin: I too enjoy sipping from a bottle once in a while when watching a movie.

IIRC it's only a sin if it leads to drunkenness or would otherwise endanger yourself or others.

How long until we have thread named "is it sin to breathe"?

Recommend me a Christian film that doesn't suck (suck = Left Behind-like shit).

Anybody have the webm of that Catholic priest talking about Jesus drinking wine?

b85c80 No.582353

>>581174

This reminds me. There is this friend of mine who went the crazy road. Back in high school, he used to rave about we breathe in the air, stealing the air from animals and other plants, microbes we breathe in will be destroyed by our immune system and the list goes on until it ended at human should die because we are harmful.

He went off the deep end the last I have heard of him.

"And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin."

Romans 14:23

you do realize wine back then often was literally just juice and not alcoholic right

9712ad No.582472

>>582447

Wut? Juice would have been poisonous pre-pasteurization. Fermentation (making juice into wine) prevents this. Wine had to have been alcoholic until the 20th century.

9abf29 No.582479

they boiled it

You cant just cherrypick a line. Look whats around it; in which situation and context it is in. For example in this case you must read Romans 14:20-14:22 to understand the 14:23.

89ba44 No.582496

>>582472

Then why was Christ called a drunkard for drinking wine?

9712ad No.582516

>>582496

Because all wine/fruit juice is necessarily alcoholic unless you believe they went around boiling juice instead of fermenting, which is objectively good for (look up medical benefits of components of red wine).

59e9c7 No.582530

According to Aquinas it only becomes a mortal sin if you become in a state where you have intoxicated yourself where you may commit a mortal sin that you wouldn't have otherwise. You can feel the effects of alcohol (just like caffeine or tobacco) as song as you don't get so blitzed you wouldn't do dumb stuff you otherwise wouldn't have.

There is no problem feeling the effects of Alcohol as long as you don't get drunk to the point you'll do dumb stuff that the next day you'd be like why the hell did I do it.

I believe the meaning still applies for the most part, despite that section being about sanctified pagan sacrifice.

If you doubt that something is good for you, it's probably best to avoid it.

OP doesn't need to drink, if he doubts he shouldn't.

If he is confident that it's fine, then go ahead.

Of course, one can jump from uncertainty to certainty.

cad828 No.582627

Personally, I avoid it and if others ask me I tell them to avoid it as well. Alcohol and the self indulgent culture around it is the essence of the worldly culture we as Christians try our best to avoid.

Be especially wary if alcoholism runs in your family. I don't know if science has proven if alcoholism is heretical, but I've seen too many friends with family members who have struggled with it succumb to the same demons.

13845e No.582696

No, drinking is not a sin. Being drunk (of your own will) is however. I'd suggest not risking it becoming an everyday sort thing though.

568d8d No.583347

There's no sin in what you described alone, but it may lead to sin.
