>Lyrics to Gethsemane

I only want to say

If there is a way

Take this cup away from me

For I don't want to taste its poison

Feel it burn me,

I have changed

I'm not as sure

As when we started

Then, I was inspired

Now I'm sad and tired

Listen, surely I've exceeded expectations

I Tried for three years, seems like thirty

Could you ask as much from any other man?

But if I die

See the saga through and do the things you ask of me

Let them hate me, hit me, hurt me, nail me to their tree

I'd wanna know I'd wanna know my God

I'd wanna see Id wanna see my God

Why I should die

Would I be more noticed than I ever was before?

Would the things I've said and done matter any more?

I'd have to know I'd have to know my Lord

I'd have to know I'd have to know my Lord

I'd have to see I'd have to see my Lord

I'd have to see I'd have to see my Lord

If I die what will be my reward?

If I die what will be my reward?

I'd have to know I'd have to know my Lord

I'd have to know, have to know my Lord

Why should I die?

Why should I die?

Can you show me now that I would not be killed in vain?

Show me just a little of your omnipresent brain

Show me theres a reason for your wanting me to die

You're far too keen on where and how but not so hot on why

Alright I'll die!

Just watch me, just watch me die!

See how I die!

Then I was inspired

Now I'm sad and tired

After all I've tried for three years, seems like ninety

Why then am I scared to finish what I started

What you started – I didn't start it

God thy will is hard

But you hold every card

I will drink your cup of poison,

Nail me to your cross and break me

Bleed me, beat me, kill me

Take me now

Before I change my mind…

I dislike such ways of representation. But it's done with good intentions and it's all that matters.

It's like evangelism. I dislike how it's made but they are attracting some people to Christ and that's all that matters.

He wrote Herod's song first.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was supported by someone else who had already done two works off the old testament.

As soon as he became popular he never wrote about the bible against and his works about the bible, especially Christ, were intentionally subversive.

I don't know if it reaches the level of blasphemy but the only Christians I've ever seen watch it are the mainstream cucked protties like Methodists and such.

Blasphemous or not, this is amongst the silliest crap I've ever seen.

Disco-Funk music in Biblical times?

Scantily clad ShowGirl-esque dancers?

Roman soldiers crucifying Jesus who like they just walked out of a gay nightclub?

Seriously?

Rides the line of acceptability imo. Gethsemane as anon posted above is pretty offensive to pious ears, implying Christ didn't know he was God. On the other hand it's inherently impossible to make a drama about Jesus that is both theologically accurate and makes him have any psychological conflict of the kind we usually expect in major characters. Then the crap with Mary Magdalene is also obvious pandering. It's probably for the best that the real main character is Judas.

I grew up watching this movie and I'm not a heretic as far as I know so *shrug*

During the overture they show up in a bus, get into costume, and set up props and scenery. If you go into JC Superstar expecting a documentary, then you're doing rock operas wrong.

>Is this musical blasphemous?

Yes. The play was worse than the film and was modified to be less so in order to reach a mass audience.

>>580675

Oh, it wasn't done with good intentions. As >>580703 writes, it was intentionally subversive. However, the Golem always gets out of the control of the Rabbi, and I can testify that a love of the music from the movie did indeed attract a few people I know of to investigate the Church, one of whom eventually became Orthodox and threw away the soundtrack album.

>>580674

Full of heresy, but cleverly disguised, as all good subversive heresy is. Yes, Jesus prayed to have the cup taken away from Him, b/c Jesus was fully human and humans don't want to die. But Jesus was also fully God at the same time, with both a human will and a Divine will, with neither mixed or diluted it appears to be a contradiction but in reality it is simply one of the many mysteries of the Church.

Jesus knew what His death would accomplish, and it was NOT a personal reward, and not about being "noticed," and in sharing His divine essence with the Father, He wouldn't have to ask to see "a little of your omnipresent brain." He knew the reason, it was to conquer Death, by Death, to raid hades and free those souls, and to assure everlasting life in the Resurrection for us all.

"Sad and tired"? No, Jesus was in command of the circumstances of his own death. He gave all the orders. Read John's account. He said to let the apostles go, and they did, and Peter wasn't even arrested for cutting the Chief Priest's cousin's ear off with a sword! He refused to defend himself legally when Pilate tried to let him off the hook. He even went to the Garden knowing that Judas would bring the jews there, when He could have easily avoided it. He gave up the ghost, He even lowered his own head before doing it, showing He was in command until the end.

While the song has just enough truth in it to be attractive to the casual listener, to the deeper listener, it's subversive as all shit.

Top kek

I'm actually listening to the vinyl record of the soundtrack right now.

I never thought it was blasphemous per se. Much like one of the previous anons mentioned, if you're going to a musical expecting 100% theological accuracy, then you should be attending a church and not a musical.

Also, to people criticising Gethsemane for portraying a Jesus with doubt and confusion over the sacrifice God is asking him to make, I'd suggest reading Matthew 24:36. I believe that the father and the son aren't in perfect harmony. Jesus is human and it's not impossible or even improbable to assume he still felt the negative human emotions such as doubt or anxiety.

That song comes partially from Matthew 26:39. "And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt."
