That may be the case today, but it wasn't in the past. Regardless, it makes no difference, because proclaiming that a person has gone to heaven means proclaiming that they haven't gone to hell. Whatever you want to say, you are still presuming to know the will of God. This is possibly the main thing, aside from Papal infallibility, which turns me off Roman Catholicism.
To put this into context, I am currently returning to the faith after being an atheist for many years, and right now I am in the process of deciding which church to join. I grew up in an Anglican school and my girlfriend was raised a Catholic, so I have first-hand experience with both churches and at least some understanding of them, but I am trying to keep my mind open to all options at the moment.
