As we know, there are two genealogies in the Gospels. One is Matthew, who was writing to Jews, who traces the legal lineage of Jesus(or Jospeh, depending on your interpretation) and goes all the way back to Abraham because that's what Jews would primarily focus on, and the other is Luke, who was writing to gentiles, who traces Jesus(or Joseph)'s biological lineage all the way back to Adam because that's what they would care about most. The reason for two genealogies is because there were a number of fairly common scenarios in ancient Israel which could result in a man becoming the biological son of one man while also being the legal son of another(i.e. Levirate marriages, the man's father-in-law having no sons of his own, etc.) But what I'm wondering is if there's some symbolism in this. Like maybe, in addition to being the biological sons of Adam, we Christians are now also the legal descendants or heirs of Abraham through Christ, even though many of us aren't descended from him biologically. I admit this is kind of half-baked but I just wanted to see what you guys thought.

Well Christians are the seed of Abraham according to the promise, which is what that song is about.

http://biblehub.com/galatians/3-29.htm

Abraham was the father of many nations, not just one (the Jews/physical Israel).

http://biblehub.com/genesis/17-4.htm

All Christians are considered the heirs of Abraham in this sense, so Abraham is the father of all the many nations that exist within the church.

This video explains the purposes of the genealogies, the logic behind the specific names mentioned and words used, and why they come from a supernatural source

The Gospel of Matthew is targeted at Jews, so of course Abraham, the father of the old covenant, would be the first of the lineage here.

The Gospel of Luke focuses more on the universal effect of the Gospel, so Adam, the ancestor of all men, is the first of the lineage.
