Self flagellation. I was reading and wondering about it. What do you guys say about it, the morality and spiritual result of it?

b42c11 No.564113

I think it should be more common, I'm thinking of starting it.

Masochism is not healthy nor spiritual nor Biblical.

Waste of time, damages the body and gives a drug like endorphin fix

Stupid.

You shall not make any cuts in your body for the dead nor make any tattoo marks on yourselves: I am the LORD.

6cfb40 No.564125

Would fasting be similar to the momentary discomfort you feel from the cuts and bruises one receives? It’s obviously dicey and could be abused by those looking for a high, but it reaffirms the body’s healing ability.

I’m a big proponent of fasting, either only eating when the sun’s down or a liquid only fast once a week and for 3 consecutive days every couple of months.

I heard it helps with constipation for what it’s worth.

If that's what it takes for your faith, and God is calling you to discipline this body, I see no wrong. It's just another practice in a long list of methods of self-denial and putting the will of the flesh under the Will of the Spirit.

Useful, but dangerous to do without a guide, especially if youre scrupulous.

seems pretty demonic, it's basically what legion was doing in Mark 5:5 before exorcised.

you don't see Jesus or any of the apostles cutting themselves in the New Testament.

7c47e8 No.564143

Masochism is pride.

dc4f77 No.564151

Self-flagellation is form of mortification of the flesh.

"For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live."

"Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry."

"And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires."

"Blows that wound cleanse away evil; beatings make clean the innermost parts."

It was practices and is practices by many, of which many also became saints. Even Martin Luther practiced it (even though he hated "monky" things). Even one of his infamous thesies are "inner repentance is worthless unless it produces various outward mortification of the flesh."

But one must remebrs, that it is means, not ends. There have to be humility and prudence in mortification. And if you want to do severe stuf, like self-flagellation, you have to do it under gudiance of spiritual director.

Doing it for plesure is sin (but enoying it for the sake of Christ, spirutally, is not, as Paul writtes "I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake").

Likewise, if you do it for reasons of scrupulosity you are sick man.

And of course, Flagellantism as it was practiced by heretics in 14th century is to be avoided peroid.

It's not self flagellation. It's Mortifying the flesh and denying your selfish desires. Working out, fasting is a type of mortifying your flesh. Self flagellation is a meme that perverse masochistic people impose on themselves to feel good.

its for literal crazy masochist.

To all you who think bad of it, why? If it is done in secret, like acts of Mercy and Prayer, then how is it pride? There is no showing off, there is no bragging, or anything to feel good about, it is simply a form of self-denial and mortification.

850c58 No.564185

>>564173

Your body does not belong to you.

82b393 No.564198

>>564185

What do you mean with this? That we do not harm it? I think of the body as something in the fallen world, and that we are a soul in a body, this being the perfect state (when we die and go to heaven or to hell, our soul is released from this form).

Possibly that when Adam and Eve were "clothed", it was a metaphor for being dressed in this form. I know about them being ashamed, but was that because of the sin in their souls? I'll have to read more about that.

But we are obsessed with this body, we serve it and it's wants (the will of the flesh), wouldn't fasting, the discipline of prayer and reading the bible, and even self-flagellation help get us closer to God?

This is literally gnosticism and you don't even realise it. The danger of protestantism well illustrated.

82b393 No.564262

>>564255

What is the Catholic (or Orthodox) reading of these scriptures? I know some Protestants read it literally, and others do not. It varies a bit, but I'm willing to learn about others. Is there a Church Father or someone who has written about it that I can read?

You mean God clothing our parents in animal skin?Literal. Adam killed animal as a sacrifice to God (as for he was first one of the patriarchal priesthood) and God taught him how to make cloth out of it via exemple.

Origen is the only one who thought it was metaphor but he had some really bad ideas about Eden and souls.

I don't know.

My conscience says to give up everything and live without entertainment. However, it often tells me to do morally right but impulsive things or make vows which sometimes seem foolish in hindsight, so I'm not sure I should fully listen to it.
