My boyfriend (same-sex) and I are cradle Catholics. We really love our faith, the saints, Mary, the church history, most things really, and we attend mass every week. The problem is that we are constantly fearing rejection by the priest or the parishioners (even though there is a fair number of liberal parishes here in San Francisco), and this is making him really uncomfortable lately. We're thinking about attending an Episcopalian service next week. So here is my questions:

1) How similar are both churches in terms of rituals and the sacraments?

2) Is there any reverence for Mary and the Saints? This is really important to me.

3) How would you defend the beginning of the Anglican church? I'm not sure how to feel about Henry VIII doing the things he did.

4) Any other pointers? Something else I should know?

Scripture and the Church are very clear about homosexuality – those who fall into it are forfeiting their salvation for pleasures of the flesh. Furthermore, if you're as Catholic as you're saying you are, you should know that leaving the church over a personal disagreement with dogma essentially amounts to apostasy.

This is a rough and tumble place so people can be abrasive, but we're trying to help you. This I can guarantee as much as a mere man can: if you switch to a supposed church that doesn't recognize sodomy as sinful for political/cultural reasons, you're not going to see the Kingdom. Bottom line.

And no, the posts were absolutely not uncalled for. You asked for pointers and things you should know, and people gave it to you. The fact is, homosexuality is very clearly condemned as a grave sin by the Bible in multiple places in both testaments. You choose to ignore this fact. Either you acknowledge it as sin and don't care, or you think you know better than God. Either way, you're not only gravely sinning with sodomy, but also through arrogant pride and hubris (which your attitude in this thread conveys as well).

Being a Christian is not easy, and it's a life of sacrifice–always has been. Turning away from sin and bettering the self to move towards God was the core of Christ's word. If a church does not condemn sin and supports its congregants living a lifestyle that is abominable to God, then you will not find salvation through that church

I'm sorry to hear about some of the hateful posts you got.

I am also a cradle Catholic and I also suffer from same-sex attractions. However, I live in celibacy in that aspect. Scripture affirms that marriage is sacred and between a man and a woman (Genesis 2:24) and Christ himself affirms this (Matthew 19:4-6).

There are many Catholics with SSM that have abandoned lives of sin and pleasure in order to get closer to God. Ultimately, this pleasure of the flesh does nothing for us but drives us further from God. There's no happiness down this road, my friend. I know numerous Catholics that have also left their same-sex relationships for this very reason.

I don't recommend that you join Protestantism. They will cater to your desires, yes, but that will not bring you closer to God.

I ask you to watch the mp4 I attached, it's an interview with a Christian that has same-sex attractions. I think he makes some great points.

May God guide you in making the right decision and I will definitely be praying for you.

As regards your questions:

1) The BCP liturgy is an adapted rite that was used in the Salisbury Cathedral. Liturgically, it's similar to Rome.

2) Yes, this is common, especially in the high church tradition. Veneration only, of course, and requests for the prayers thereof.

3) Henry was a bad guy. The CoE was returned to Rome under Mary and the final break happened under Elizabeth, who couldn't be Queen if Rome were reinstated, as Rome considered her a bastard. Rome has gotten better over time and the split wouldn't have stuck if it happened today.

4. I'll just say that while I'm not gay, marriage has both unitive and procreative purposes, and can be celebrated where procreation is biologically impossible. I cannot deny the agapic love I have seen in some gay couples. It's a hard point theologically and I thank God I don't have to choose.
