I'm pretty sure Jesuits come on here making threads sometimes like they're just about to be convinced to become Catholic and then magically they are decisively convinced by the wonderful arguments. I'm not sure how effective it has been in making an impact on other people considering how transparent the attempts appear to be from the outside.

Internet "fights" aren't about winning, it's about showing the audience who is wrong. That's why personal attacks don't work, people who actually read the entire argument understand when someone is being retarded.

No, but arguing can be fun if you get a good or extremely upset opponent. It's useful when the two sides start sourcing claims because then that segways into research and learning. Even if you're too pigheaded to question your own stance as I am you can slowly learn how to make your arguments more solid.

Arguing hasn't converted me to anything really, but it has led to a better understanding of why people believe differently and what their reasoning is so I don't just fly off the handle all red faced over it as much. I get where they're coming from a little better where as before I could believe they were just some automaton malicious force sent by Satan to annoy me.
