I was introduced to God implicitly through meditation (as zen buddhism doesn't speak of God; the whole religion revolves around practice). I had been practicing seated meditation for 2 years and reading about Zen when I started considering getting baptised, mostly because of traditionalist sentiments (I'm Eastern European). I've been a baptised Orthodox christian since the end of this summer, but I must say I've failed to transition to this new Christian practice. I've failed to grasp praying although I have not given up on doing it. I feel like I'm missing the role of practice as a concrete act of faith. Will I be forever stuck between these two religons? I've ordered a study bible in English. My guess is that a person of my generation is as allienated from traditional orthodox culture as an american is so that book might be just what one needs.

Prayer is a personal connection with God. In this life it's faulty and filled with our own biases and preferences but progress through this imperfection is essential.

Meditation is a fine tool for clearing away inordinate attachments to the objects of sense but in the Christian view, this is only preparatory for the personal union with God. The purification is necessary because nothing impure can be in God's presence.

Prayer is also a gift of God, not a matter of one's own efforts. However, our efforts are necessary, and other things being equal, more effort will get more progress.

The four pillars of prayer are humility, patience, discernment of and obedience to God's will for ourselves individually, and the soul of it all, charity or love.

You can keep looking within, because the kingdom of God is within you, but realize that the God you find within is also the same God who exists outside of you.

Fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. Fear and love, always.

Thank you for your comment. Are you implying meditation itself is not in conflict with the doctrine?
