Is this russian priest right? I understand not killing others for the sake of revenge, and 'eye for an eye' but what about self-defense and bringing criminals to justice? Gen 9:6 is still operative, right?

But a state that is trying to act in accord with Christianity, in accord with the Ortho Church, would it listen to Genesis 9:6 ? and execute certain criminals?

However, to defend others, yes. We must be ready to put ourselves in danger for somebody else and protect them from harm or death, even if that means killing the attacker.

I think we are to defend ourselves because our bodies don't simply belong to us, but they belong to God and to others as well, our parents and families and wives…

a father who doesn't defend himself is putting his family at risk, his wife might not be able to take care of the kids and earn money, etc.
