Mods, I know that St Augustine is the board's official patron saint, but perhaps there's room for a second? I read some selections from the life of Saint Gemma Galgani today, and her behavior is utterly endearing. For example:

>From her infancy she had become mistress of her eyes, and kept them habitually lowered. When traveling to Church for Mass or on errands, she constantly kept her eyes downcast.

>In order to make her look at you, a formal command was needed. She then obeyed but only for a few seconds and again, modestly blushing, lowered her eyes once again.

>Without thinking evil of anyone she normally feared all company, and desired to remain alone, and if it had not been necessary to go out to church and sometimes to the city on errands, she would never have left the house. The same may be said of talking, mixing in the affairs of others, making friends, writing letters and suchlike.

>from her earliest childhood she shrank from being touched by others, and from the most innocent caresses. In her childhood, she endeavored not even to allow her father to kiss her.

>the poor child, not knowing what else to do, used to shut her eyes and keep them so until the angel of impurity had gone. She also seized her Crucifix, called for aid to her dear Guardian Angel, to her patron Saints and above all to her Heavenly Mother.

I have a feeling this pseudo-autistic behavior rings familiar to some people here. In addition, she was tremendously dedicated to spiritual and bodily chastity, something which many of us struggle with. Thoughts?

Saint Gemma Galgani, pray for us!

I find heaven to be kinda scary. The thought of some kind of pleasure/feelings of glory that we cannot even understand with our limited human senses is alien and scary. Wouldn't that mean that enjoying anything on earth is useless in the long run?

I have seen all the works which have been done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and striving after wind.

Nehemiah told the repentant Israelites that the joy of the Lord would be their strength (Nehemiah 8:10). The early church was characterized by gladness and the joy of the Lord (Acts 2:46; 13:52), and “joy in the Holy Spirit” is a distinguishing mark of the kingdom of God (Romans 14:17). Those who are part of the kingdom share in the kingdom’s delight.

Joy is part of the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22). In fact, it is our Christian duty to rejoice in the Lord (Philippians 3:1; 4:4; 1 Thessalonians 5:16). In Christ, the believer is “filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy” (1 Peter 1:8).

Half the users don't believe in intercessory prayer, that the saints who have died are still living, and that they rejoice in our efforts despite being absent in body?

>Confess therefore your sins one to another: and pray one for another, that you may be saved. For the continual prayer of a just man availeth much.

James 5:16

>And concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read that which was spoken by God, saying to you: I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.

Matthew 23:31-32

>For though I be absent in body, yet in spirit I am with you; rejoicing, and beholding your order, and the steadfastness of your faith which is in Christ.

Colossians 2:5

May the love of Christ be with you!

i get that you're trying to make an argument for Saints who have moved from this life to the next, having some measure of cognisance of this life we live, and moreover; are able to intercede with God on the behalf of those who pray to them - but if you're interested in a counter argument i can give you the beginnings of one here

first off, what Rome defines as a Saint is completely alien from whom the Apostle Paul declared to be qualified a Saint, so rather than being someone who has performed at least one attestable miracle and lived a life so virtuous that they have added to the Treasury of Merit and thus can contribute their virtue to those who have not met God's standard of goodness; St. Paul addresses all believers as Saints in his letter to the Ephesians

we can see this posture as a development on the words of Christ who said that there was no more righteous man before John the Baptist, but that even the least in the Kingdom of Heaven would be greater than he

(John being under the Law, the saints being under the new covenant of Grace)

this is because no matter how mired in Sin a truly repentant follower of Christ might be, it is not his personal virtue nor moral acuity which makes him 'sacred, holy, or set-apart unto God' - but rather, it is the virtue of the Almighty God become the Man, Christ Jesus; who by His work on the cross has won that soul which has been given Him by the Father, setting even the most deplorable renegade apart for the purposes of doing good works unto God

so i'm sorry but unless you can make a case for the RCC's beatification of only a few of the more noble souls, rather than the orthodox understanding that all believers are saints; there isn't really any point in trying to convince me that those who 'have fallen asleep' can mediate for us

Mostly, but anything pleasurable in the Lord's eyes is worthy of taking joy in. Not sure why you would consider it "spookedanimegirl.png" worthy realization though.

The way she struggles to resist sin humbles me. Her diary would also trigger many non-catholics, particularly this part:

"Those words filled me with a joy such that I do not know how to express it. Jesus said a number of other things; I also asked why after Holy Communion He did not allow me to taste the sweetness of Heaven. He answered promptly: "You are not worthy, oh daughter," but He promised that the next morning he would do it."

in other words, the confirmation of the true presence during the Eucharist and people being in an unworthy state despite faith

The distinction is between a canonized 'Saint' and a 'saint'. Neither "contribute their virtue" as you put it. They pray for us. The process of canonization is based on verified miracles having occurred on the basis of a deceased person's intercession. It clarifies who it can be said for certain is in heaven or not. All of us, as believers, qualify as 'saints' in the St Paul sense. So we're actually on the same page.

I found these questions and answers on the subject a few months ago, hopefully they clear up the issue for you. Are you EO, or just checking it out for now?

Disagreed completely, /christian/ is a great way to lurk and actually learn of the differences of denomination and the teachings of Christ and the Church Fathers.

Not only that, /christian/ is probably a macrocosm of Christianity as a whole, a bunch of Catholics with tiny bits of belligerent KJV Baptists and misc. Protestants, mixed with a healthy bit of Orthodox.

Saint Gemma was a "normie". There's a reason she's a patron saint of students. She was tops in her classes at university. Many of the people here believe academia to be "jew controlled normie conditioning".

Personally, I think OP just found a pic of a "kawaii waifu" and didn't read all that much about her before making this thread.

You don't know what you're talking about.

>In a competition amongst the children of the city she won the gold medal for Christian Doctrine. This success elated her father, who thought of sending her later on to the University. But Gemma's answer to the suggestion was uncompromising: 'No father, the University is not for me.'
