This prayer is prayed so often in services and during the day we should all be familiar with the meaning of these holy words! Here is an interpretation of St Maximus the Confessor:

Glory to God!

Interesting, my interpretation was always a little different. But this is pretty much just what I came up with based on my understanding of God and the faith, I have never done any actual research on this subject.

>Our Father who art in heaven,

We acknowledge that God is God, and that he is our Father (unlike anything else in creation we have the soul and free will, which come from Him)

>Hallowed be thy name.

We worship Him and want the whole world to worship Him.

>Thy kingdom come.

By His kingdom coming I always understood the biblical end of the world and the second coming of Christ. So by saying this, we accept this fate and await it.

>Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

We submit ourselves to His will, rather than wanting to be "free", doing whatever we want and following our own will. We want the same for the whole world, as that's how it is in heaven.

>Give us this day our daily bread,

By this I understood asking that He provide us all the material goods we need to live, trusting Him with our physical wellbeing and affirming that we don't worry about material goods.

<"Look at the birds of the air: They do not sow or reap or gather into barns — and yet your Heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?"

>and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us,

We ask for mercy and so that God forgives us the sins we commited, but by doing this we also obligate ourselves to forgive our brothers their trespasses against us.

>and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

We ask for protection against temptations and demonic influence.

Yeah, I think St Maximus' interpretation is probably based on some ideas of the Old Testament where the preincarnate Christ is the Angel that has YHWH's Name in Him, or the Name that is in the Temple. Also, as the Father anoints the Son with the Spirit, this is why the Spirit can be seen as kingdom which is confirmed by a textual variant for the third line which says, "Let Thy Holy Spirit come and purify us." That is how the Lord's prayer is Trinitarian.

>daily bread

the original greek uses the word ἐπιούσιον / "epiousia" which is apparently a made up word that translates to something like "supernatural substance"

>manna

It's actually a made up word that only appears there. It could mean "super-substantial" or it could mean "coming day." We don't know whether the root is "essence" or "day."

Cool! Never knew that

Considering the context of "Give us this day" I think it's safe to say the root is day.

>Our Father

Not just mine or yours, but Father of all. Even if just some of us pray to Him, we acknowledge his true Fatherhood over all

>which art in heaven,

Serving to further clarify who exactly the Father is whom we are addressing, and to remind us where He is right now.

>Hallowed be thy name.

Reminding of the first principle to love God over all and to therefore first revere his name over all

>Thy kingdom come.

Willing that the return of the Creator's reign and order return to this world.

>Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

Wanting all things subordinated to His will on this world, as they already are in heaven.

>Give us this day our daily bread.

Accepting God's provision in all aspects of our daily life. As it said in Psalm 3:5, we awoke each day only because the Lord has sustained us.

>And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

We want to walk in all of the Lord's ways, to forgive in like manner as we have been forgiven each day (of far greater, by our perfect Lord).

>And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:

Calling to mind the eternal word that God will not allow his own to fall into harm beyond what we are able, and earnestly seeking for the Lord to guide our paths away from all of those things.

>For thine is the kingdom, and the power,

Knowing that he is from everlasting, and to everlasting. Everything is within his grasp.

>and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Knowing his glory is that which saves. All of those things belong to Him, proceed from Him without end.

Just my own opinion
