Where does the "Catholics dont read their Bibles" come from?

It makes me triggered tbh

3bfede No.538927

Let's be honest here: most "Christians" don't read their bibles.

>most "Christians" don't read their bibles.

Majority of "Christians" are barely Christian. But those who're steadfast in their congregation…

I just wanted to get an idea of where such a thing originated from, unless it had to do with the Reformation and people being told they need Church authority to study their bibles.

6ab886 No.538943

>>538937

research the adamites, taborites, hussites, etc etc

The precedent for "you need Church authority" for reading the Bible is established because heresies usually ended up with people turning revolutionary and trying to kill Catholics/Clergy and usually local government and Kings.

6ab886 No.538944

>>538943

which, btw, the Reformation was the same thing writ large. see: queen elizabeth the I's massive purge of catholicism

the nazi's did it too when the Church opposed the racism/paganism latent in Hitler's rhetoric too

This is just a joke, man. Be cool.

Honest answer: It comes from the period of time when most people in the Christian world were illiterate, so they had to rely on their Priest to guide them. It is still a wide misconception that Catholics prefer to listen to church tradition rather than read the text for themselves.

>>538927

This too

And this

f7601e No.538952

I prefer to listen to a good priest explaining me things of God then to read the Bible for myself and make up all the sorts of heresy.

Its funny because you can tell it was meant to be baptist flag bait but it was completely true.

No, I was just stating my opinion. I really don't like how people look at the flag and assume the worst.

Well, yes, but you're obviously not illiterate.

Wait I'm pretty sure that's contradictory

Doesn't Jesus Christ explain why he shared this tale in the bible? What verses are that?

From Biblical Literalist Heretics who would have been excised by hook or by crook for the first 1600 years of Christianity.

What's worse is that they're not only heretics but cherrypicking ones out of context at that, an example would be threads on here citing "putting away Childish things" as a line of it's own when it's very clearly talking about different ways, one childish and one not, of loving God.

From any thread on the Reformation where Catholics jump in to talk about how great it was that there was no Bible in the vernacular and that they don't need to read it anyway because of homilies. This happens quite frequently on this board. I understand and sympathize (though not necessarily agree) with the Roman Catholic position on most aspects of the Reformation except when it comes to "no Bibles in the vernacular" and "Mass should be said in a language most laymen don't understand."

>>538927

Also this.

I think it means to live by the laws of God, and so without sin as the garment is an analogy for your soul and having sin on it would be inadequate when meeting with God, that's why the man was cast out. (pic related, it's judment day)

Most Catholic countries used to teach Latin in school pre Vatican II.

I live in Brazil and most schools thought Latin just because the Catholic faith was so dominant, and I bet it was the same for most Catholic countries, but sadly having mass in Portuguese means we lost Latin classes and a good chunk of our culture.

Thank God I found traditional Latin Mass in my city, not to take the merit off of regulas Mass but I prefer the Latin (also it keeps the liberal priests away).

Also, sure reading the Bible is good but it's not necessary for salvation or else all laymen would go to hell before the press was invented and bibles would be accessible to all, don't you agree? Also there have been illiterate Saints.

55bce9 No.544199

Well, it's not just that. The Church should exist for those who are not there yet most of all. If a poor, lost sinner wanders into Mass and the whole thing is in Latin, what is he to think? It's enough for many newcomers to deal with when to stand or kneel or sit. Throwing in a language they are unfamiliar with is another hurdle on top of that.

Mass entirely in Latin appeals to ME, as a Christian and somebody who is studying Latin. I think it is neat. However, I fear that doing so hinders the Great Commission because it paints the Church as a lofty institution that one must scale to find open doors, rather than reaching out a caring hand. The Church should mimic the fact that God reached out to us through Christ. That's just my opinion though, and I do think it's great that it keeps liberal priests away.

In regards to Bible reading, I do not think it's necessary for salvation, but I believe it is good and useful. That is not the argument that is usually heard. I have heard from some Catholics that people reading the Bible is actively a BAD thing because it promotes heresy. I disagree. The thing most people would do in face of a troubling passage is ask a priest. It speaks more for a clergy that needs to be trained better than anything else, in all honesty, if that is the fear.

Is it a /christian/ meme?

Because then I'd like to claim some credit. pic related.

It was only said in jest.

At the time, the meme was that Cathbros don't read the Bible becuz they don't have to becuz the church tells them everything they need to do and so reading the Bible is an unnecessary thing., per this guy:

>It is still a wide misconception that Catholics prefer to listen to church tradition rather than read the text for themselves. >>538950

Untrue, perhaps, but it was early days on this board.

I don't think it's a reformation thing >>538937 but instead has more to do with this guy who gets it >>538927 These days, when most people don't read it, other pics are intensely related

>>538945

Is this seriously what /christian/ has come to, is it – OP asks about a meme they dislike and the "banbait" chorus starts.
