Well, it must be quite bothersome to live with someone that takes your stuff without asking, so you should apologize for your roommate and buy him a new jar of peanut butter.
As to pathological lying, don't use that as an excuse to avoid improving yourself, for no sin is beyond God's grace. You should ask your confessor for guidance, and start praying the Rosary to resist temptations to lie.

I was listening to one of those sermons by Fr Ripperger and he said God doesn't hear your prayers if you're in a state of mortal sin (using this to explain why the prayers of Protestants won't work). Does this mean my prayers are useless until my first confession? Do the Orthodox share this belief?

I joined the Roman Catholic Church for spiritual and symbolic reasons, and access to certain forms of spiritual practices/liturgies that were beneficial to me, but I think the body of Christ is far beyond my Church, and that most members in it, currently also including myself, are not "Christian." I don't think any denomination/sect/so-called-apostolic-line is the true Church(tm) per se, but that some have higher concentrations of actual Christians in them than others, and at different times too. I would still, despite all of this, reccomend the Catholic Church, as it gives a framework of the universe with it's holy dogma and doctrines that is able to contain all spiritual truth you find. Anything that is true spiritually you can find here in one way or another, this framework is super helpful for achieving union with God. I don't see it in any other Church, it is either partially there, too clouded, or the members/founders are/were too thick headed to spell it out. And none seem to have the organized unity for expressing it with clarity that the Roman Church does. Hope this helps

Peace be with you,
I have a very stupid question. When praying alone, many prayers I read have both a V and R part, versicle and response. When alone, do I read/recite both? Or only the response, imagining that some personal some were read the V? Or are these marks only relevant in groups and alone you read both always?

Below, I am linking you a VERY THOROUGH list of all sins, both venial (= do not bar you from eternal life) and mortal (= probably going to hell unless you confess.)
As a catholic you would want to confess both kinds, though the mortal ones are of course far more devastating; the venial ones you will want to avoid to help you grow in piety and to become a better person.
Still, this list of sins should answer your question. Warning, it is quite long!

That's something you'll have to continually discover between you and God. That's a lifelong process. The thing is, anything that goes against God (anything not for him, is against him) is a sin. That shouldn't feel too restrictive. You see, God is many things. He's not just good, but he's also the truth. You should be living in the truth, living in good, etc. When you speak lies, you speak of satan. Similarly, when you speak the truth, you speak of God. Now, the nature of the truth is another topic all its own. Think about these things. First and foremost, develop your relationship with God, and these things will necessarily fall into place.

Not sure where to ask this, besides making its own thread?
But how do you get over feeling let down by people, lately I've been feeling like I can't thrust anyone. I've always been the "if you want something right, do it myself" kind of guy, but lately I've come to realize that if you want to progress in life, you just got to rely on other people for some stuff, life isn't meant to be lived alone.
However as I'm trying to get out there, I realize the more I try to rely on people, the more I get let down. Be it for some little help with work, be it just wanting someone to be there, and even worse, you can't rely even if it was to help themselves.
I know this is some sort of big change in perspective, and that I probably let down many who tried the same on me, so I would very much like to know anyone thought about this. I've guess the worst part that makes me mad, is that being letdown puts in a bad mood, which in turn makes me give up on my own standards, eg failing, letting myself down even worser.

Gnosticism and Buddhism are very distinctively non-Christian beliefs. The Creation Stories do not match up and work out. Irenaeus has written much against it and is a good starting point to learn more about them. What does happen after death is not fully revealed to us, much like Christ was not fully revealed in the Old Testament. What is known is that there is a final judgement, some sort of purification process, and then the resurrection of the dead. Earth is the preamble to the full process.
Buddhism does not possess the full truth, in fact it actively points away from Christ. To tell a lie, you must tell parts of the truth. Resurrection can be misconstrued as reincarnation. Asceticism and the subordination of the body to spirit can be misconstrued to mean that reality itself is evil. Realize that the perspective you are taking is not the Christian perspective, but the Gnostic. Be careful.
>>816404
Never place your faith in yourself or in others. They are human and will let you down. That is what "sin" means, "missing the mark" "falling short". You must realize that you are accountable to Christ first and foremost. There is not one thing you can do that isn't done through Providence. You will fail, and others will fail. Take refuge in the Lord in Good and Bad times.
When you ask someone to do something, expect them to fail. It's not the absolute right way to go about it, but it makes it easier to forgive others when they do fail. Otherwise, it'll be a pleasant surprise. the problem you find is incredibly common. Simply showing up and "shooting straight" is a virtue beyond most people. Don't let someone else effect you.
"If-" by Rudyard Kipling is a fantastic poem that's relevant.

2362 "The acts in marriage by which the intimate and chaste union of the spouses takes place are noble and honorable; the truly human performance of these acts fosters the self-giving they signify and enriches the spouses in joy and gratitude."145 Sexuality is a source of joy and pleasure:
The Creator himself . . . established that in the [generative] function, spouses should experience pleasure and enjoyment of body and spirit. Therefore, the spouses do nothing evil in seeking this pleasure and enjoyment. They accept what the Creator has intended for them. At the same time, spouses should know how to keep themselves within the limits of just moderation.146

Something about there being two different women instead of Eve and the snake, does anyone know about this reference?
In the same manner, I remember hearing something about the deep meaning of the "sin", being something like "letting yourself down" or "disappointment". Does anybody know about this reference as well? And specifically if it also applies to original latin and derived languages?

Lillith is just a post-Christian Kabbalah myth. None of it is relevant to Christian's. Often times, if a Christian thinks it's real, they're misinterpreting the chain of events in creation. They think that the story of Eve occurred after God had created "man and woman" despite it occurring on the 6th day.
Sin is an English term that means moral transgression. In Greek, the term often used is "hamartia" which, as I have been taught, is a term used in archery that means "falling short" or "missing the mark". The Latin term for sin is "peccatum" which very literally means "to stumble" or "fall short". Even Hebrew uses "hata", which also means "to fall short". Can't confirm the Aramaic term, but it's also more in line with "to owe" or "to be indebted". It's more accurate to say that sin is a stumbling or falling short.

Instantly, unless you believe in purgatory as the Catholics do, in which case all spiritual impurities will first be burned out of your soul. Unless you die in a state of perfect grace, that is. Perfect grace would mean you have done all the penances for the sins you were forgiven for and you haven't done ANY venial sins since your last confession. (Unlikely - but it does happen; some saints became so saintly that even the most minor venial sin made them feel sheer horror.)

To be honest, I believe more in purgatory than I do in heaven or hell, purgatory is common between several religions and cultures, and more pronounced in general within the bible. On the other hand the Kingdom of Heaven, has a different connotation on different languages, and sometimes gives the impression that it will happen on Earth itself as opposed on different dimension.

There's really not much to know about Lilith. The story goes that when God created man, he created Adam and Lilith. But Lilith was equal to Adam, not subservient. She was displeasing to Adam, who complained to God. God banished Lilith from Eden, then went about creating Eve when He saw how lonely Adam was, this time making her subservient. Lilith then goes on to become the mother of a host of demons referred to collectively as Lilith, who roamed the world looking to eat the flesh of men in a vampiric/succubus parallel, roaming the night and howling. Some sources say she slept with an Archangel.
Really, that's about all there is about Lilith in terms of mythology. The Origins of the myth is far more interesting and relevant. The Vulgate Isaiah uses the term "Lamia" for the one actual biblical reference to Lilith. The Vulgate was written with reference to contemporary Hebrew texts of the time, ca 400 ad which is approximately the time Lilith was introduced. It's more likely that the Hebrews recognized a similarity with the term "lilith" meaning "screech owl" or "night creature" with the Mesopotamian "lilitu". Very similar to the process by which we received the term "Beelzebub". It's a case of Lilith understood to mean Lilitu which is then translated in the Greco-Roman myth of Lamia! This is why if you refer to Isaiah 34:14, you'll often read "screech owl" instead of Lilith in most translations.
If you're really interested in the myth itself, study Kabbalah and the other Jewish myths and absolutely avoid any of the feminist/wiccan/new age interpretations divorced from the Jewish mystical tradition. The Jewish myths are BS (there is common disagreement over the demonology and translations) but more genuine than the New Age crap. The New Age understanding of Lilith is just as bad as any modern "druid" cult trying desperately to restructure the remaining Celtic religions into something meaningful.
>Purgatory
I'd caution you for your assertion that Purgatory is more real than Heaven and Hell on the basis of its commonality in other religions. Comparative religion as a base for your belief is a step removed from full-blown Gnosticism.
>Kingdom of Heaven is a different
dimension
Careful use of words can prevent misunderstanding. The Kingdom of Heaven on Earth is supposed to be established after Judgement Day. This is part of the Apostle's Creed.

There are only two fast days that are necessary for your salvation.
Ask for fasting on Friday it again it's not a hundred percent necessary but it does help build the virtue of temperance. Since it's only gonna be a one-time thing for that barbecue I wouldn't worry about it. But if you insist on you know somewhat abstaining have like one burger or brisket or whatever and don't indulge yourself in the delicious barbecued food.

Of course, my soul is ultimately saved by Christ. Are there any saints for language-learning? Does this count as a good work?

Thank you for the prompt response anon. Indeed I would like to be able to be able to speak with other nations about Christ. I'm not sure how to go about finding missionary work.
A very very interesting thing is that in Japan they do have a Japanese Orthodox Church ( ハリストス正教会) and I might be able to do something in regards to that if given the chance.
I'm actually Orthodox and in my country (Romania) we studied Latin in high school. However, I can only understand some of it because it's so similar to my own native language. (same with Spanish and Italian I guess). I do understand how praying in Latin might be a great thing though. I do value its spiritual importance although we practice Eastern rite here.
To be honest my intentions of starting languages were not so pure right off the bat, because some of the reasons were money, bragging-rights and becoming an "ascended" weeb. Now that I've found Christ, I'd like to put it to very good use and bear fruit this way perhaps.

I too struggle with this. A lot of the reasons for doing something are very selfish, but a part of becoming Christian is realizing that the selfish desire is ultimately derived from a desire for Christ. Learning to direct it towards God is always difficult, but when in doubt stick to the priorities. If the act of learning or speaking another language actively takes away from God, then stop it. But if you just doubt the motivations behind learning it, reject both the false motivation and the temptation to quit. It's a trick to make you miserable needlessly. What use does singing have, yet how many sing for the enjoyment of it? What use does gardening have, yet how many garden for the enjoyment of it? Learning another language for fun is a pure endeavor, don't fall into delusion on either end.
I'm American Orthodox and I could not imagine attending a Russian or Greek service regularly. Praying in a language you know is vital to actually practicing Christianity. Attending Vespers and Liturgy regularly serves as a fantastic Catechism, but I would have missed way more had the service been in Russian. That being said, as a convert the learning of prayers itself is a very useful way to learn languages, even in my native language. It taught a lot of the theological concepts and terms that I wasn't aware of. I can imagine learning to pray in another language provides greater insight to Christianity and the language itself. the big schisms occurred over minute semantics that end up having a great ramifications. The devil is in the details.
I can only speak English fluently, but I have some familiarity and educational background with French and Mandarin, and some familiarity with Japanese. China also has a Church under Russia that's been trying desperately to spread beyond Harbin (Chinese government restrictions), Shanghai has some prominent Churches, as does Taiwan, FWIW. I always feel conflicted, a part of me wants to do missionary work in China, but another part wants to help establish the OCA in some way. Regardless, if you want someone to help with Chinese and Japanese studies, I wouldn't mind the help either. I get sidetracked too often. No pressure, no offense taken of you're not interested.

Thanks, that's exactly what I wanted to know.
Regardless if its a myth, canon or not, this a whole lot more of sense, and tbh represents quite well the kinds of women we see in reality. Either the ego monster, that only purpose is to satisfy its selfish desires (eg, the most common type we see nowadays), and the other that sincerely accepts the guidance of men and serves with kindness (not that men should n't try to serve others as well).
To men this even draws a parallel with the christian myth, I interpret it with the snake being the profane side of the feminine, sneaky and poisonous, that makes sense to me with the image of Holy Mary stepping over the snake, eg, she defeated her profane side, reamaining truly holy.
>I'd caution you for your assertion that Purgatory is more real than Heaven and Hell on the basis of its commonality in other religions.
>Careful use of words can prevent misunderstanding. The Kingdom of Heaven on Earth is supposed to be established after Judgement Day. This is part of the Apostle's Creed.
I agree on both parts, and I know this understanding usually doesn't fly well with most christians. But that's what I tried to say, purgatory is more commonly mentioned throughout the bible, "the mansion of the dead". Same for the kingdom of heaven.

To add the other replies, friday abstinence is only implied by the church on Lent time, and even then, its not like its promise for heaven or exchange for a blessing, its just an exercise of self-control and temperance, improving one's virtue. For example, I still keep -almost- daily my fasting diet that I kept on Lent period, fasting since lunch for a humble dinner afterwards, for one simple reason, it makes me feel better and clear minded.

Jesus is quoting Pslams, specifically this one:
From D-R Bible
Psalms 21
{21:1} Unto the end, for the morning protection, a psalm for David.
{21:2} O God my God, look upon me: why hast thou forsaken me? Far from my salvation are the words of my sins.
{21:3} O my God, I shall cry by day, and thou wilt not hear: and by night, and it shall not be reputed as folly in me.
{21:4} But thou dwellest in the holy place, the praise of Israel.
{21:5} In thee have our fathers hoped: they have hoped, and thou hast delivered them.
{21:6} They cried to thee, and they were saved: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded.
{21:7} But I am a worm, and no man: the reproach of men, and the outcast of the people.
{21:8} All they that saw me have laughed me to scorn: they have spoken with the lips, and wagged the head.
{21:9} He hoped in the Lord, let him deliver him: let him save him, seeing he delighteth in him.
{21:10} For thou art he that hast drawn me out of the womb: my hope from the breasts of my mother.
{21:11} I was cast upon thee from the womb. From my mother's womb thou art my God,
{21:12} Depart not from me. For tribulation is very near: for there is none to help me.
{21:13} Many calves have surrounded me: fat bulls have besieged me.
{21:14}They have opened their mouths against me, as a lion ravening and roaring.
{21:15} I am poured out like water; and all my bones are scattered. My heart is become like wax melting in the midst of my bowels.
{21:16} My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue hath cleaved to my jaws: and thou hast brought me down into the dust of death.
{21:17} For many dogs have encompassed me: the council of the malignant hath besieged me. They have dug my hands and feet.
{21:18} They have numbered all my bones. And they have looked and stared upon me.
{21:19} They parted my garments amongst them; and upon my vesture they cast lots.
{21:20} But thou, O Lord, remove not thy help to a distance from me; look towards my defence.
{21:21} Deliver, O God, my soul from the sword: my only one from the hand of the dog.
{21:22} Save me from the lion's mouth; and my lowness from the horns of the unicorns.
{21:23} I will declare thy name to my brethren: in the midst of the church will I praise thee.
{21:24} Ye that fear the Lord, praise him: all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him.
{21:25} Let all the seed of Israel fear him: because he hath not slighted nor despised the supplication of the poor man. Neither hath he turned away his face from me: and when I cried to him he heard me.
{21:26} With thee is my praise in a great church: I will pay my vows in the sight of them that fear him.
{21:27} The poor shall eat and shall be filled: and they shall praise the Lord that seek him: their hearts shall live for ever and ever.
{21:28} All the ends of the earth shall remember, and shall be converted to the Lord: And all the kindreds of the Gentiles shall adore in his sight.
{21:29} For the kingdom is the Lord's; and he shall have dominion over the nations.
{21:30} All the fat ones of the earth have eaten and have adored: all they that go down to the earth shall fall before him.
{21:31} And to him my soul shall live: and my seed shall serve him.
{21:32} There shall be declared to the Lord a generation to come: and the heavens shall shew forth his justice to a people that shall be born, which the Lord hath made.

If you are just reading it for the fun of it and not indulging in the practices of said materials, then I don't see what harm it would do. I find it very fun to read the European pagan mythologies and folk tales, but I don't let it lead me astray from my faith. Don't know when it stopped, but you should definitely be going to Church as often as you can manage. It's not obligatory, but the Holy Eucharist is a great gift with real power to change and sanctify you.
One could make the comparison that it's the spiritual equivalent of just going to some place every day and getting free 1000$ for just being there. And obviously the Eucharist is worth much more than that

It honestly doesn't seem implausible for it to be either a human innovator who uses technology to solve issues like hunger via gene-editing or state-enforced food equity with meat cloning. My alternative theory is it's just an "ai" with information on every living person thanks to a constant upload of human vitals, communication, and location caused by an iot implant (mark.) Naturally man would worship its own creation and claim it's greater than a deity since it has a tangible presence on earth.
But ultimately its going to happen no matter what so don't worry too much about it. Just stay away from social media and iot devices (and cell phones if possible) as the days go by.

Absolutely absurd. Sacred Scripture is the word of God. However, I would definitely recommend reading the Gospels first. The Old Testament only makes sense in light of the New Testament, but once you have that key, the OT is very beautiful and helps to explain a lot. It's also full of references, symbols, and prophecies of Christ's coming. Consider following the Gospels with the rest of the New Testament (which will give you the history of the early Church and a lot of theological/moral wisdom) and then starting with the more approachable books of the OT (Genesis, Exodus, Job, Ecclesiastes, Wisdom are some that come to mind for me). You could start reading/praying the Psalms at any time too – your understanding of them will continue to grow and change regardless. God bless, anon.

thanks for answering but look:
"20Then Noah built an altar to the LORD. Taking from every kind of clean animal and clean bird, He offered burnt offerings on the altar. 21When the LORD smelled the pleasing aroma, He said in His heart, “Never again will I curse the ground because of man, even though every inclination of his heart is evil from his youth. And never again will I destroy all living creatures as I have done."
why does noah make a blood sacrifice to god and why is the aroma of burning flesh pleasing to god?

Thats how sacrifices were made in the OT. Read the Law books (Leviticus and Deuteronomy). It is choke full of examples of the sacrifices to God. It was a system to make Israel understand the consequences of their sin. Negative reinforcement I believe it is called.

also why does god say "every inclination of his heart is evil from his youth" when jesus says

it makes the impression to me that the LORD in the OT is in fact satan acting as gatekeeper.

jesus says no one has ever seen god. but
"11Thus the LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks with his friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young assistant Joshua son of Nun would not leave the tent."

100% true. My parish had to practically fight the priest to get 3 of the weekday Masses at an earlier time (7am) while the rest were at 12:10pm. Some more people are able to make it because of this, although I personally think a first-hour/prime (Divine Office time) Mass at 6am would be supreme, and then a second one at 12:10pm, and maybe a third at 6pm. Sadly that will never happen.

How should a parent go about teaching his or her children the proper etiquette about waiting for marriage for sex while still explaining to them to avoid masturbation? When I and my girlfriend were being raised, both of our parents chose to not teach us anything about our sexual organs, and so we learned on our own. In doing so, we both independently decided to stay chaste til marriage. I'm curious whether this was a cause and effect of the lack of mention or if we were simply blessed by the Lord into believing so on our own. Effectively, in the shortest of versions, I'm asking on whether I should explain to my future children sexual immorality (and naturally, as they are children, give them an interest in it inadvertently…) or simply to leave it to chance. Is leaving it to chance just leaving it in God's hands, or is it being a derelict parent?

these are some notes I took at uni, take them as you will
Council of Nicea (325)
• Arius
○ Believed that the Father is greater than the Son, who in turn is greater than the Holy Spirit
○ Did not believe that it was possible to have a hierarchy of divine beings
○ The Son is the one through whom the Father created the universe, but nonetheless he is only a creature made out of nothing, not God
§ He is not eternal but had a beginning
○ Arius's teachings are found today in Jehovah's Witnesses
• Condemned Arius and produced an anti-Arian creed, the Creed of Nicea
○ Arius interpreted the traditional phrase "begotten of the father" to mean that Jesus Christ was created by the Father out of nothing.
§ This interpretation is excluded in the Creed with "that is, from the substance of the Father"
○ Only the father is "true God"
§ Called Jesus Christ "true God from true God"
○ Jesus Christ is "of one substance with the Father"
§ Homoousios was the most controversial word in the creed
○ A number of Arian statements are anathematized or condemned
• Nicea split the church into two major groups
○ Nicene party
§ Clear on the full deity of Christ, unclear on the eternal threeness of the Godhead
○ Origenists
§ Clear on the eternal threeness of the Godhead, unclear on the full deity of Christ
• An extreme Arian party soon arose, maintaining that the son is totally unlike the Father
○ The three hypostases of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are of one substance with each other
• The deity of Jesus Christ is the foundation of all true Christian faith
• Arius raised one of the most important issues in the history of theology, and the early fathers were right to state the full deity of Jesus Christ clearly

The OT Laws are interesting. The Ten Commandments are "spiritual" Laws and are eternal, whereas the rest are adminstrative, judicial, and ritual, which was fulfilled in the Church and State (which was once an extension of the Church). Justinian Codes and all other medieval legal systems and their descendants are successors to the OT law.

I was baptized and a "cultural Catholic", but never got anything beyond a childish conception of religion. I'm trying to get back into (proper) Christianity and the Church, so please have patience with me.
There's something that's the center of the Christian faith, yet I am not able to believe: that the wine and bread of the Eucharist are the actual blood and flesh of Christ. I can understand it as something symbolic, as a reminder of Jesus's sacrifice ("do this in remembrance of me" - Luke 22:19), but I can't believe that bread and wine is anything beyond food with an important meaning. Can someone Godpill me on this one? I'm not thinking "haha, all this anons believe the bread is God and I'm so smart", I believe there's probably some really important stuff that I'm missing, and I'm hoping once I comprehend and understand it I'll come to believe.
Any kind of insight is welcome. If anyone knows a good lengthy article or podcast that talks about it, it'd be great too. Thank you very much in advance.

New mass made it hard to understand what the mass actually is supposed to be.
In Catholic understanding, the mass makes the sacrifice of Christ on golgatha present. Not as a new sacrifice, but as the specific event in 33 anno incarnationis Domini, the one valid sacrifice to God in remission of venial sins.
Now, since Christ as the sacrifice suffered and died on the cross, bread and wine are given to his people throughout the ages. Outwards they are "symbols" (bread of flesh - wine of blood), but inwards they are transformed through the Holy Spirit.
I accepted this teaching when I read, how early christians emphasized the importance of the eucharist.
For example, here is Origen (Homily 38):
[…] if we do not eat the bread of life, if we do not eat the Body of Christ, if we do not drink His blood, if we neglect the holy communion of our Saviour, we should know that God holdes both benevolence and strictness.

So, in it's physical form, the bread and wine are still bread and wine under the consecration. In that sense, it is symbolic. But since it symbolizes the sacrifice of Christ, it allows us to participate in it, not so much to remember it but to take part in it and be saved through His love, death on the cross and resurrection. The food is still food, but by allowing us to take part in the sacrament, it becomes more than mere food. Am I getting it right or am I spouting heresies?

It sounds good to me.
According to the IV. Latern Council, which formulated tried to make the mystery of the eucharist as understandable as possible, the physical outward form (so-called accidents) doesn't change. But the unseen substance is transformed by the consecration.

Can someone explain Galatians 3:16 to me? I have been struggling with this passage for a few days now. Here, Paul exegetes the passages of Genesis (12:7, 13:15, 22:18, 24:7) which detail the promises made to Abraham and his progeny. According to Paul, since the text says that the promise is made to his 'seed' and not to his 'seeds,' this promise is referencing a particular person, namely Christ. However, in the Hebrew language, the plural form of the word 'seed' (זרע) does not differ from the singular, as in the English 'sheep' — the only means of distinguishing between the two is of context — and the context of the passages shows quite clearly that the author was referring to a multitude of descendants (Gen. 13:16, 22:17), namely the whole of the Israelites. This indicates to me that Paul was not very knowledgeable of Hebrew and simply misread the passage since he was relying on a Greek translation, which would distinguish between the singular 'seed' (σπέρματί) and the plural 'seeds' (σπέρμασιν).

Tbh, she is better off without you.
But, in the spirit of charity, I'll do my best to explain to you why you are wrong in your personal interpretation of the law.
You see back than, God didn't have a face and was unknown to us. Now that we have His Son Jesus, God's face IS known to us. Thus we are able to have a closer relationship with God because of it. Hence why there were many icons and statues of our Lord after His death.
They only people autistic enough to believe that absolutely NO pictures of any sort shall be taken of ANYTHING are protestants that dont want to get closer to God, Jews that openly reject God, and Muslims that were fooled into rejecting God.
But lets assume you want to stay as protestant, thats fine. Do what you want, but don't get ridiculously autistic that you can't take any pictures at all ever. It's a picture, a snapshot of the past to help you remember a memory. No one is worshiping the photos she takes, not even her. Lighten up and BEGOME.

different anon, you'll come to realize that to walk with Christ requires walking IN Christ. Not in the sense of being Him, but of being is communion with Him. When you are baptized you die beside Him as the thief did on that cross, when you partake in his body you are with Him as the disciples were in the last supper, accepting His sacrifice for you and your sins, in full awareness of your sinful nature, when you pray you commune with Him as the Son communed with the Father on the mount of olives, expressing your whole soul before Him, hiding nothing from yourself or Him (like anger, sin, love, etc). Don't keep a glass wall between yourself and Him, where your day-to-day is on this side, but your nightly prayers are on that side. And remember that the Church is not the stones we lay, but the spirit of God within us shining outward like a beacon in the night.
For the record I'm protestant.

If the question is genuine and not trolling, God is not material so "His image" doesn't mean a physical body but our essence, the soul, is made similar to Him. Thanks to our soul we have intelligence to know things, to love and freedom to make choices. The size of a part of the body is not essential to us (although proportions may be?), we still remain human even if we loose that part of the body.

In Hungarian villages, everyone used to do this, even the most devout and Catholic men I've ever seen. It's probably a venial sin at the very most. Yes, you're supposed to submit to the authority of the state, but you still need to be careful. We're under no obligation to obey unjoly or evil laws. The reason for that law is twofold: one, to tax alcohol for income, and two, to prevent people from poisoning each other with poorly made bathtub gin. As long as you use it strictly in private and make sure it's safe to consume and don't fall into the sin of drunkenness and don't sell it, thereby avoiding tax, there's no problem. Or that's what we rural Hungarian say. And our priests are in on it.

Guys I’m recently starting to get back into Christianity. I never doubted that God existed, I just got burned out with church things and became angry at my church for different things.
I’m currently a 7th day Adventist (kinda) and I’ve been noticing that on this board it’s basically Catholics vs Orthodox (feat. Baptist’s) so I just wanna know, is seventh day Adventist a sham? And which denomination should I look into if I really wanna follow the Bible. Thanks

>which denomination should I look into if I really wanna follow the Bible
First, understand what the Bible is: a recompilation of the books early Christians found to be the most valuable and inspired by the Holy Spirit. It is not, strictly speaking, the word of God, like Muslims believe the Quran was written by Allah and revealed to Muhammad word by word. The Bible is the collection of books Christian tradition values the most. It its to be understood inserted in that tradition, otherwise it makes no sense (or worse, it makes sense in erroneous and misleading ways). And I'd add that, as a Christian, you should not follow the Bible but the Holy Spirit, and use the Bible as the ultimate guide to follow It.
>cath or ortho
Personally, I'm a Cath. There are differences between both denominations, but honestly, there are more differences inside each denomination than between them. Though I'd rather see people follow Rome, for I think it's harder to find salvation outside it, I have to advise you to follow whatever works for you. If you live in a country with a Catholic tradition, then Catholicism will fit better with your way to understand the world, and will help you better to understand faith. If you're from an Orthodox culture, then the same will be true about the Orthodox Church.
>I’m recently starting to get back into Christianity. I never doubted that God existed, I just got burned out with church things and became angry at my church for different things
Remember than the Church is much greater than just a parish. Different people live religion differently. If your local priest gives sermons that seem boring or uninteresting, go to another parish. If you don't feel comfortable yet with some rites or dogmas, don't adopt them. Research them, try to understand them and understand why you may feel against them. Maybe you'll connect better with religion through mindful daily prayer, or through strongly participating in charity, or through living religion in community or through lengthy theological texts. You know yourself, and you know what may be a better way for you to approach Christ.
And talk to a priest. Seriously, it may seem like a meme because of how often it's mentioned, but it's extremely helpful.
I hope that's somehow helpful and God bless you, anon.

I wholeheartedly agree with >>821730 but I'd like to add: be very careful, anon. Distilling alcohol can kill you if you don't know what you're doing. First, alcohol is volatile and toxic. If you're doing illegally you may be tempted to do it in a hidden place that happens to be not well ventilated or have a low ceiling. Secondly, and most important, you may get methyl alcohol / methanol, which is extremely toxic and can even cause permanent blindness.
Distilling is not a sin, if you do it for yourself, as a hobby or a experiment, and without bad intentions. But still, be mindful and responsible.
>>821410
>don't break the law of legitimate authority
Legitimate is the key here. When the government says "don't kill" it's legitimate since that mandate emanates from God. When the government says "don't do your own stuff without giving me money to spend with my cronies" there's nothing legitimate about it. The State is good when it acts in accordance with God, but don't fall into the trap of believing everything that emanates from authority is good. You may end up making an idol of the State.

Don't follow the Bible, follow Christ.
Remember that the Church is not the brick and mortar but the body of Believers.
Make sure to spend time with the Christians who have the Spirit of God within them. You will know them by the fruits of the spirit, and their Christ-like nature. Spend time with these people and you will find the living church.
>>821922
>If your local priest gives sermons that seem boring or uninteresting, go to another parish.
This sounds dangerously like church-jumping (people who only go to church for the emotional high, and leave when they don't get it).
>Maybe you'll connect better with religion through mindful daily prayer, or through strongly participating in charity, or through living religion in community or through lengthy theological texts.
You'll connect even better if you just let the Holy Spirit guide you and are honest in your faith. These are all valid but can become distractions if you're doing them in the hope of connecting with God, instead of doing it out of the Love of God. The goal should be to walk in Christ, everything else will come naturally as your fertile soul bears fruit.
>talk to a priest.
This, seriously. Be easy among those who bear fruit, and weary among those who don't.

Yes, I should caveat that. Sometimes priests give, consistently, awful sermons. If you go to church and hear sermons that constantly make you question your faith in a bad way, then that specific church may even be harmful for you.
Some priests talk about the most mundane things. A few weekends ago, a priest gave his sermon about prudence while driving. If you go to church is to get closer to God, to get life and spiritual advice, advice you could not get in any other place. "Boring or uninteresting" was a bad choice of words on my part. I should have said something more akin to "if you find that your local priests consistently gives sermons that do not help you with your faith, consider searching for a parish were the sermons do help you".

It is likely true that in general certain ethnicities are more predisposed to bad behavior. But I would warn you against thinking that every white/black/asian/jewish person acts the same. It is divine revelation, that Christ can sanctify anyone - a hebrew and a gentile, male and female.
I'm thinking maybe their bad behavior has ritualized, for example:
Some jews have internalized this us vs them attitude
Some blacks mostly living in an environment of fear and carry that feeling on, i guess
White leftists seeing everything as oppressive
I hope I'm making sense. Whatever you think of race theories, just don't let it interfere with the commandments and you're good to go, because race is only really distinguished as the people of God and those still outside the ark.

Your question is rather common. It's good that you ask.
Men are made in God's image. You can't trully love God and treat other fellow humans as "less worthy" in God's eyes. You'd be resentful towards God and towards what you have recieved from Him in you.
Also, idolatry is a concern. You should be worried about what is Godly, leave what belongs to the world in the world and seek Him instead.

I would like to try attending a Catholic church. Of the two nearby, one is what I assume is a "typical" (sorry if this is rude but I don't know how else to put it) Catholic church. It's a St. Charles Borromeo church, in case that makes a difference. The other is a Byzantine Catholic church. I'm sorry if I'm misunderstanding things or being disrespectful in any way, I just really don't know much at all about how this works. Assuming you're not a Catholic:
1) The former is a Western Rite Church (ie Latin Rite), while the latter is eastern and follows its own liturgy. If you're not a fan of the Latin Rite, or in this case as you described it, then you can always partake in the Byzantine Rite, which is eastern (obviously). The differences between them are found in how the Mass is performed. Each Church has its own liturgy written by a specific Apostle, sometimes one of the original apostles. However, the core theme is the same, renewing your Covenant with God by partaking in Holy Communion.
2) you can attend the Masses in these two Churches, but you cannot receive the Eucharist, since you are not baptised into the Catholic Church.

It's sinful to fast on feast days, or to fast excessively, or to refuse the kindness of others. The ascetics varied their diet with fruits, vegetables, and insects, and fasted based on instruction from their spiritual father. While it may not be the wrong thing spiritually for you to fast constantly, it requires a great deal of consideration and discernment. It's only a good thing when you focus the energy from eating into prayer, otherwise it's a worse sin. If you aren't already, follow the Orthodox fasting schedule (New Calendar). It should be challenging enough as a start.

He's without sin, and He wasn't married. Therefore, He was virgin. St Paul also clearly states that virginity and chastity is the most moral stance to sex, so we can also deduct from that the virginity of Jesus. Jesus mission was also to die for us on the cross and triumph over death. His mission did not involve having offspring, so therefore he didn't. If He had children, you can be sure they'd be mentioned in the Bible.

As far as I know, the Catholic Church recognizes most marriages as valid, even those done outside the Church, but they would just "natural marriages" and not sacramental. I think the circumstances also depend on whether the woman is Catholic and when she converted to the faith: was she Catholic before her first marriage? Did she convert during it, or after the divorce?
Any Catholic in that situation should just go and talk to his local priest and explain the specifics of his situation.

The penis goes into the vagina. That is all.
Butts are exit only.
The mouth deserves better treatment than being used for sodomy.
<banned on what grounds?
The commandment against adultry and the moral prohibition on sodomy and onanism. The sodomites used sex for their own degenerate pleasures and were annihilatedfor it. Onan used his wife only for pleasure and he was killed for it.
An easy rule of thumb:
If you wouldn't see Sts Joachim and Anne doing said act in their marital bed, than neither should you.
Penis goes in vagina. Anything else is a sin.

From what I understand, it is frowned upon to do positions other than missionary because it reduces the intimacy between husband and wife, but if husband and wife wish to explore other positions they are free to do so as long as penis only goes into vagina and the husband finishes in his wife.

Friend, you don't need the Bible to tell you that the Earth is round much like you don't need the Bible to tell you how to perform an appendectomy. The Bible is a theological and history book, not a science book. The verses you see saying "the four corners of the earth" are poetical.
If the Earth was flat the sun and moon would never set or there would be no time zones as day and night would be uniform across the entire earth.
Humanity knew the earth was round before Jesus was born. See embed related as it has a mathematical proof.

>60 miles away
The circumference of the Earth is 24,901 miles. 60 is a tiny blip. It's not even a full degree of latitude. It also depends on how high up you are and how clear a a day it is. I'm not watching your video, but I'm sure you can try some simple math.
>>825785
Depending on which version you read, it varies. Most English translations are poetic, rejecting colloquialism for literal translation. For example, "40 days and 40 nights" is a specific amount of time in English; but, in cultural terms of the people who wrote the BIble, it just meant "a long time". Based on perspective, a week can be "a long time" or an hour can be "a long time". It's one of the problems with most English translations.

in Matthew 23, when Jesus is talking to the Pharisees he calls them Broods of vipers and yet they are not actually in the form of snakes. They are humans like you and I.
How can that be? Jesus says that they are snakes and Vipers, and yet snakes and Vipers cannot have human forms and say human things like humans. Was Jesus being literal or poetic?

>I'm sure you can try some simple math
Yeah I'll give it a shot…
Given the Earth's stated circumference, the curvature drop amounts to 8 inches per mile(squared)
>1mi = 8in
>10mi = 800in
>60mi = 28,800in
>28,800in = 2,400ft
So, something on the surface, as observed from something else on the surface, should be? Yes, 2,400ft below the horizon and therefore unobservable.
The statue of liberty is 315ft from base to tip of torch. Adding the rock foundation it stands upon gives it another 24ft. So the tip of the torch is 329ft above sea level…Let's call it FOUR HUNDRED just to make the simple math a little more simple shall we?
>2,400ft- 400ft = 2,000ft
It's been said that not just the tip, but the entirety of the statue can be seen by boat passengers as far as 60 miles away.
>duh they're higher than sea level
Please give me some simple math calculations for how much further an observer will see given a certain height of observation.

I might think about but I have some questions. I was baptized as orthodox when I was born. I really like the orthodox denomination but there are no churches in this country so I received my confirmation as teen in a protestant church and am registered as a member. Can I just walk into a catholic church and ask to be baptized as catholic or something? Wouldn't it be weird if I became a Catholic if my dad and my mom are orthodox and protestant respectively? I really have no cultural or ethnical relation to catholicism. Also, am I obliged to be a papist if I become a catholic? I'm not really that much into the pope thing.
Sorry if the questions are stupid but as you can see I don't have that much experienced with being a christian as I never gave it serious thought.

I'm not going to lie to you it'll probably get awkward between your parents and you. Depending on how anti-catholic they are of course.
>I really have no cultural or ethnical relation to catholicism.
So? The thing about Jesus' church is He wants everyone inside of it, not just a certain group of people. You have to think about it in the terms of Noah's Ark. In the terms of symbolism Noah and his family represents Israel, and the two of every animal represents the Gentiles. In order to save everyone God commands they all be put into one ship. Not a confederation of smaller ships, one big ship with one clear captain.
>Also, am I obliged to be a papist if I become a catholic?
If by papist you mean " the pope is always right no matter what" then no you are not obliged to be a papist. A pope can be wrong.
Especially today, most of the Pope's biggest critics are Catholics. Personally, I'm not even a fan of the Pope. But you always have to remember that God gives us the leaders we deserve. Considering the state of our world we deserve someone like Francis to terrify people with modernism so they come back to the traditional faith. We applaud Francis when he does and says something right. We pray for him when he does and says something wrong.
And fret not, friend. Never took my faith seriously, thought I didn't need the authorities God gave me. The thing is is you need a central leader to keep your pride in check. Democratizing the faith has done nothing good for the East or the Protestants.

It could get heated between you and your parents, yes, although it's hard to say since I don't know them. As for the cultural aspects of Catholicism, I'm a convert who attends a parish with a high percentage of French Catholics and sorta understand what you mean, although I don't believe you'll be an outcast. The worst thing about it is having missed out on a Catholic upbringing, so meeting/befriending/dating Catholics your age is that much more difficult. As for the Pope, most Catholics tend to pray for him, quote him on occasion, give him praise for doing a good deed, and that's about it. Unlike what Protestants would have you believe about "Pope worship" and other old wives' tales, he doesn't play much of a role in our lives.

I'm trying to decide between Orthodoxy and Catholicism, and I'm hoping to be able to start attending services from each denomination to get a better firsthand feel of the atmosphere. Nevertheless, one of the make-or-break questions for me is, does Catholicism (particularly of the Trad variety) feel that my non-Catholic family members will automatically go to Hell?
I ask this particularly because, as far as I can tell, Orthodoxy does not feel as though non-Orthodox will inherently be sent to Hell, only that Orthodoxy is the surest way to Heaven. Is this actually the case? And what of the Catholic position on the question?
I love my family more than I love living, and I couldn't join a church that consigns them to damnation.

Anytime you let Satan win, their souls go to hell. The problem though is that even "regular Catholics" and Protestants are doing this all the time. Even a goody-goody in Catholic church once a week or once a month, isn't guarantee'd a spot in heaven. Especially if any of them have the habit to disregard the Bible moment they've stepped outside. Just at "Women priests" in other denominations for example, who are infamous for this behavior of "embracing world peace" or "the end of racism" Anytime you tell your kids about world peace, remember "world war" and "world peace" are interwoven events. You cannot have peace without paying the blood of young men. This blood requirement will be be forced to the next population for the next taste of " world peace".
There's a strict line between "believing in God" and "having faith in God." If you're not a half-bad parental figure, then hopefully you can raise more of the latter than the former.

Perhaps tho, these are venial sins. To be a moral sin it must be both a serious sin and intentional. What is the dividing line between venial and moral when it comes to a serious sin? It appears that is a sin to teach the difference!

A mortal sin is the complete turning away from God and embracing something else in place. It’s deadly to the life of grace, because it insults the honor of God and injures the soul of the sinner. We're talking things like rape, murder, incest. If you're doing those things, then you need to seek immediate help.
Impure thoughts are disconcerting, but not untreatable. Go to confession, pray the Rosary, and do your best. We all fall short, but remember that you are worthy of His love.

Thank you friend for doing my suggestion! It really helps keep threads on topic and not many anons, even some Christians are not willing to help facilitate discussion.
I'll try answering the insect question.
"Insect" is not a good translation of the Hebrew, שֶׁ֣רֶץ or sherets (Strong 8313). A better literal translation is "swarming things" or "crawling things" or even the English "bugs". I'm assuming most translations are carrying insect over from the KJV, when insect was synonymous very simple small creatures rather than the strict modern taxonomical definition. Fowl is also a bad definition here for עוֹף, or oph (Strong 5775), which can refer to any flying creature and not just a bird. This includes flying bugs.
Now there's another thing we have to consider. The ancient Hebrews did not consider the rear legs of insects to be regular legs. Rather, they would consider what we call the hind legs of insects to be a special appendage for propulsion, flight, or some other. We can see this in Lev. 11:21-22 when God allows the Israelites to eat locusts. The four "legs" of locomotion are called "feet" in these verses compared to hind "leg" used for jumping. because the four legs are treated collectively against the jointed hind leg, they are thus different in the anceint Hebrew's mind.
Simply put, any insect or bug that use the front and middle legs to walk are unclean, while locusts and like creatures fly and hop. I hope this is helpful.

You missed the part where I mentioned that the Catholic Church doesn't think I'm married. They said there was "No marriage to heal".
In the old days, they'd tell me to get a legal divorce and move.
That's my dilemma…. If I go SSPX, they will tell me I live in sin even with no sex, thus cannot take communion.

Did you get married in the Church? If so, then you ARE married and divorce is an absolute no. In not, then don't worry about it.

May as well go to the Baptists.

How do we know some of the exact numbers and measurements of oddly specific things in the Bible? For instance, when reading through Numbers and how it gives an account of how much each offering weighed down to the shekel, how do we know that's exactly what it weighed? Did the priests keep physical records of each offering?

Depends on the era. Yes, priests kept a physical record. It's easy enough to look it up, but be prepared to cry if you don't trust "muh JOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOISH!!!!" sources.
But if you're looking for recipes, just wing it.

In the interest of full disclosure, I should preface this by saying I also posted this to /christianity/, in the interest of possibly getting a wider range of opinions.
As someone who is interested in Orthodoxy, I just found this article:
http://orthopraxy.com/2010/opinions/vegetarianism-and-orthodoxy/
>"We know that all sickness comes from Death, which comes from our sins. So we are constantly acknowledging that “I have caused this. It’s my fault. I brought this Death into the world and on myself. I am sick, because I have sinned.” This is the Orthodox way. We never think another person is sick for their sins – quite the contrary – we think another person is sick because of our own sins. So if you’re sick, I did that too. I brought all suffering and all dying to all things. I killed the universe. I am the genocidal maniac of the ages. Every time I sin."
Compare this with:
https://www.oca.org/questions/sacramentconfession/what-is-sin
And:
https://www.oca.org/questions/sacramentconfession/sin
>"For example, one would not find listening to rock and roll music on the list of deadly sins. However, a person who spends all of his or her time listening to such music, to the point that he or she ignores others, isolates himself or herself from people and other activities, and becomes controlled by his or her desire to listen to such music to the exclusion of other important aspects of life, can find himself or herself in a deadly and sinful condition. Listening to the music is not the sin; the music itself is not the sin; becoming obsessed with the music—and ignoring other aspects of one’s life or the importance of loving relationships with others—is what is sinful… Rather than worry about developing a list of sins to avoid, it would be much wiser to make a list of virtues and attitudes and ministries to achieve. While it is good to avoid places of temptation, it is better to seek places of inspiration."
So, which is it? The first article was so severe in its self-flagellation that I started having immediate second thoughts. But the OCA articles seem a lot more nuanced, and come from an official Church source. Thoughts?
Sorry for the wall of text btw

Why didn't Jesus, being without sin, cast the first stone on the adulterous woman?

Because he came to save her, not persecute her. He said, "who among you" not "who among us".

How do you use Frankincense?
I use a regular incense burner, the kind with the charcoal puck, and it just… burns it. You get a little bit of the aroma, then it stinks of burning.
Also, where's a good one that doesn't look pagan like this one?

For the censers I've seen that do not employ explicitly Christian imagery, that one doesn't really look that bad. It's a definitive step-up from the ones that have "Ohm" and other pagan detritus stamped on them.
Amazon seems to have quite the selection, including a couple that are, in fact, explicitly Christian-themed. Just do a general search for "thurible" and a number of them should pop up, including pic related. I've also seen them for sale in various Eastern Orthodox and Latin Catholic gift catalogs. Expect to pay somewhere in the realm of $30-50USD for one.

I am in RCIA and about to be baptized and confirmed in about 2 weeks. I am excited and thank Jesus for loving me, and saving me at a critical tine in my life. I am just curious about 1 thing. I have forgiven EVERYONE that has wronged me: does that mean God will forgive me of all that I had done? I am truly sorry for my sins, and wish to do better. I am even thinking or religious life. I am just curious on the matter is all. I love Him with every fiber of my being. I can't imagine eternity without Him
