The year is 1557. Spring.

Once, the clans of Japan cooperated, more or less peacefully, with the laws of the Emperor– and more importantly, with the laws of the Ashikaga Shogunate. In recent decades, however, the over-mighty clans have ceased to listen to the dictates and ramblings of the vestigal shogunate, and Japan's many warlords have given little more than lip service. Five years ago, the Ashikaga were driven from Kyoto entirely, reduced to exiled puppets… until now.

Japan divides itself into multiple alliances and domains. Lesser clans consume their peers for power. Greater clans band together to crush their foes underfoot. Already history has been made: the Uesugi, beaten back time and time again by bandit dogs. The Chosokabe, brought low by famine and disaster. The Imagawa, openly defying the Shogunate, are rumored to begin preparing for war. The Mori and the Otomo declare war on one another as winter ends, and begin to direct their mighty armies against one another.

In the midst of this bloodshed and chaos: you. What role you play in Japan's history from henceforth is up to you…

DAIMYO NAME: Akakawatani Nobuyuki

CLAN: The Akakawatani is one of the numerous clans of 16th century Japan, with a number of samurai and Ashigaru in their employ. The current head of the clan, Daimyo Nobuyuki, seeks to restore his clan to the glory it once held before its crushing defeat in the Ōnin War, where its lands were razed and seized as the then Daimyo sat in a siege in Aki. Now, finally able to marshal but a fraction of their old strength, they seek to rebuild, and to take vengeance on those who betrayed them.

BACKGROUND: Raised in a castle from the young age, and taught in the ways of politics and intrigue by his father, Akakawatani Nobu. He was sent to Edo at the age of 15, where he met a friend he would cherish for the rest of his life. This bear of a man, the same age as Nobuyuki , hailed from a far off land known as "Scotland" and when he talked, it sounded like a cannonade going off. There time in Edo was spent as guards for Nobuyuki's two sisters, in the city for a courting event with a southern clan, which promised to bring much wealth to the family, along with a few political ones as well. Unfortunately, a rival clan which desired the southern clan's male for their own daughter sought fit to kill the other women in the Heir's life. It was a daring attack in broad daylight as the young lady went to a supposed rendezvous with the young lordling, only to be beset on all sides by a group of ronin payed to end her life. In the end, the household guards were slaughtered to a man, with only Nobuyuki and the Scotsman still standing. The ronin laid dead in the streets, and due to the nature of the attack, Nobuyuki's father saw fit to recall his children from the city, he'd rather risk offending the southern clan then having no children to offer any clan. This was Nobuyuki's first taste of violence, but it would not be his last. Devils from the North, the Nanban barbarians, desired what little wealth the Akakawatani clan possessed, and for much of Nobuyuki's early 20's, he was fighting the savages side by side with his father, until the fateful day he died, not by the barbarians, but by the errant shot of a Clan Yabusame. Now we stand poised at the current date, Nobuyuki only taking the title of Daimyo a few months ago, and the country tetters on the brink of civil war. With his trusty friend known only as "The Scotsman" and his loyal followers by his side, he knows that his clan shall make it through these trying times, and who knows, maybe Nippon could benefit from a Akakawatani Shogunate.

TRAITS:

+ [Scholar Of War] - Your illness and frailty have given you much time to pore over theories and stratagems, and your own experience has given you a grip of iron. You gain a bonus to training martial-oriented abilities and a +5 to all battles; you also suffer lower chances of civil unrest due to your iron grip. However, your gruesome features and terrifying demeanor don't do you too many favors: you take a penalty to diplomatic actions, and your men are more easily bribed or coerced. Additionally, your frailty gives you a -20 to personal combat, and you have a lower chance of surviving battle wounds.

1. Continue to build the Trading Port. [7/10]

2. Begin training of a new batch of Ashigaru, to supplant slightly-depleted numbers. Stricter control and new lands, along with more food production, should lead to a bountiful round of recruitment.

3. Publicize the letter of the Chosokabe refusing to allow Awachi troops to run down the rebels they have allowed refuge in their lands as a stain of dishonor and injustice. Such a righteous cause - a clan harboring rebellious sentiment and spitting on their peers, as the Chosokabe have done - will attract a good deal of Samurai, both mounted and unmounted, to fight for honor, I'm certain. Perhaps when we are at their gates, the Chosokabe shall realize their mistake.

DAIMYO NAME: Kinami Naoko

CLAN: Kinami

BACKGROUND: Naoko has only recently come into adulthood. Fourteen years old and still scarcely more than a boy, he owes his position of Daimyo to his aging uncle - a man who has protected the young heir nigh obsessively for eight long years ever since the young lord's father died under suspicious circumstances.

Largely sheltered inside his family's stronghold, Naoko has not yet learned how to be an especially effective leader of men - but having been present at court for more of his life than not, he is a darling to courtiers as far away as Kyoto and Kyushu, having received and treated with all sorts of dignitaries passing through his family's territory as they make their way inland from the coast. His grip on the diplomatic rituals of the Japanese nobility may well be second to none, and some of the best tutors money can buy have found themselves endeared to the young Daimyo's wide-eyed willingness to learn what they have to impart, whether that be numeracy, accounting, agriculture, architecture or the fine arts of calligraphy and poetry.

As he grows older, however, he becomes increasingly aware that not all outside the castle walls is as peaceful as his doting uncle and blissfully ignorant courtiers would have him believe. Clashes between nobles threaten to consume the entire island nation in destructive bloodshed, and while Naoko hopes to uncover what happened to his father all those years ago, his court - and especially his uncle - hope just to weather the coming storm.

ABILITIES:

[Architect] - It is easier to build up and maintain infrastructure.

[Courtly Knowledge] - It is easier to recruit courtiers. Enemy courtier actions are of less severity. +2 to diplomatic relations.

[Mediator] - +10 to negotiating peace treaties, ceasefires and hostage exchanges.

[Poet] - +5 to diplomacy. Writing kickass haikus may give you bonuses to certain rolls.

TRAITS: [Untempered] - Naoko is young– some may quietly argue that he is too young. While this means that his foes will grow fat on hubris and have much to lever against him, this also means that he has quite a bit of untapped potential. Researching all abilities is easier for you. However, you are somewhat reliant on the aid and experience of your Uncle to properly manage your domain, and you take a diplomatic penalty to certain actions or with certain lords on account of your age and the… questionable circumstances in how you came to power.

FAMILY: Uncle (Kinami Masaru) - Though the older of two brothers, Masaru was passed over for Naoko's father due to a long-forgotten dishonour and a disinclination for rulership. He spent a long while wandering as a landless warrior, perfecting his combat skills - but returned to protect his nephew when he heard of his brother's death at the hands of ninja.

DOMAINS: Kii, Level 2, Rice Paddies, Roads and Waystations

HONOR: 3

FORCES: General's Bodyguard, Sword Hero (Kinami Masaru, Duelist), 20 Yari Cavalry, 150 Katana Samurai, 150 Bow Samurai, 400 Ashigaru Spears

AGENTS: -

"Uncle, how much longer must I watch you rule in my name? I have studied the arts - I know my numbers. How will my tenants come to respect me if I am always hiding behind you?"

The older samurai looks down at the indignant teenager, his daimyo - his brother's young son. He has been ruling the boy's lands for years now, and he has to admit that it wears on him too. He was not made for courtly interactions, he lacks the patience for many of the rituals that others seem to put so much stock in. He was always plainspeaking and straightforward, and longs for the day when he might abandon any responsibility to the management of Kii. That day is not yet. Not for another couple of years. But if his nephew is eager to take a more active role, then he could give him the opportunity to prove his wisdom.

"I won't stand in your way, Naoko. Let us talk about your land."

1. "Uncle, I know the islands are troubled. I know you have tried to hide it from me, but some secrets are too big to keep."

The older man's expression is paternally indulgent. His greying whiskers twitch into a faint smile after passing through a slight frown. "Would you have us prepare for war, Naoko? Which of our neighbours do you think we ought to ride out and conquer?"

Naoko shakes his head and sighs heavily. Something he had read about had captured his youthful imagination. "None! I would have a team of builders and landscapers begin work on a zen garden. If we can attract wise monks they may reassure the people, and we may even get refugees from the wars of the other clans. More workers for our fields would mean more taxes to be drawn."

>Begin work on a Buddhist Temple with a rock garden

2. Pleased that his nephew has enough restraint not to clamour for expansion and war as soon as he is invited to talk on matters of the realm, Masaru invites him to sit beside him so that together they can pore over a map of the islands of Japan, with the best guesses of the clans' current territorial holdings clearly marked. He indicates the long coastline of Kii province and ponders how best to raise another project he has been considering for a while.

"You have seen our stores, Naoko - drawn from taxes of a portion of everything the realm produces. Can you think of anything that is noticably absent?"

The young Daimyo's forehead creases, anxiously wondering whether this might be a misdirection - a trick to test him. He thinks for a while, wanting to be sure he has given it appropriate consideration.

"Fish?"

"Precisely!" The older warrior smiles affectionately, and fights down the urge to clap his nephew on the shoulder. He is Daimyo after all. "We have no true port. The land would surely prosper from having one - and our people would appreciate the variety it would bring to their diet."

Kinami Naoko nods, trying to look as dignified as possible. "Then let one be built."

>Begin work on a fishing port

3. The young heir lapses into troubled silence as he observes the map laid out in front of them both. Absently, he runs a finger along the border of Kii province, eyes flicking over to its neighbours. He wonders what ambitions they each harbour - which of them long for continued peace, and which might covet his holdings and plan for war.

"Something bothers you, nephew?" The swordsman's question drags the youth from his reverie with a jolt, and he looks almost bashful.

"It's just… we know so little of our neighbours, uncle. Could we find someone to travel to them, to talk to them - scope them out?"

Masaru nods. "I imagine that can be done, Naoko."

>Recruit a Courtier

The young Daimyo nods in return, rising from beside their low table. "Thank you for this, uncle. I will try and stay involved as these things unfold."

Peace, tranquility,

A shrine, port, and courtier:

A fresh beginning.

He earned the favor of the local Lord who had no brother or sons to his own, until he was named his heir on his deathbed. 1. "Welcome, esteemed scholars of Nanban and Nippon. Linguists and men of writing you are, and here your skills are needed most.

Today, we make history Gentlemen. Today marks the day we begin unveiling the boundary between the knowledge of our two peoples.

I have heard that in far off Roma, the Pope had authorized the translation of the Latin Bible into a language that can be read by other tongues. I intend to begin such an endeavor, the very first Nipponese-Spanish Translation Manual(s). I have chosen Spanish, it is a language the Portuguese can understand and should be translatable to the rest of Nanban.

It will include pictures, and guidelines for both how to read and how to write. It will be a set of guidebooks that will help teach scholars from both nations how to read, interpret, even write in the language of the other. So that the books and tomes from across the world can be read and understood by both peoples.

In time languages can change, and inevitably those of the future will have to update or even redo these manuscripts. But centuries from now when people look back and see where the first Nanban learned to read Nipponese, this is where they will say it began. But in my life time I intend to pick up a book from the west and understand it with ease.

You men are professionals at the art of tongues, now I ask you to use your profession. Let's begin, gentlemen."

1. Gem Mine 4/8. Work on the Mine goes by…. slowly. It appears that the peasants are as of yet unsure how to properly -mine- those glittering stones in the ground…

2. Unfortunately, work on the fleet stalls as shipments of lumber find their way to the wrong villages and ports. How bothersome.

3. Gain [Rock Quarry], which will give you a steady supply of stone with which to build new castles, new buildings, and other stone-related things, as well as boosting your economy marginally.

>>37954

1. Lose Excess Equipment. Gain 600 Ashigaru Spears.

2/3. Bayushi and Yon infiltrate nearby Shimosa, and begin a months-long rampage of slaughter and sin. They will report back by Fall the true extent of their butchery.

>>37966

1. Trading Port 8/10. It seems that in the excitement caused by the news of the Chosokabe's defiance has made the peasantry quite eager to bicker and talk… work goes by slowly on the trading port.

2. Gain 300 Ashigaru spears. Gain 300 Ashigaru Bows. War means a chance for reward and glory, and Peasants are always hungry for both of these things.

3. Awachi has the letter brought into open court and publicized throughout the land, to varying degrees of success. Neighboring mainland clans are rather… neutral, in the matter. And if word has reached the Shogun, then you have not heard anything about it.

Regardless, it is quite clear that the Awachi are gearing up for war. And they gain the service of several samurai who, for one reason or another, are eager to prove themselves in battle. Yes, of course, there is the matter of honor, no doubt…

Gain 100 Katana Samurai. Gain 50 Yari Samurai. Gain 7 Katana Cavalry. Gain 20 Bow Samurai.

>>37981

1. Buddhist Temple 2/6. To properly enlighten oneself and bring about a sense of wholeness, the temple must be precisely planned and lovingly constructed.

2. Coastal Village 2/6. On the coast of Kii is where Naoko's uncle, ostensibly at his nephew's behest, begins to construct what will soon be a vital trading port that will, surely, bring prosperity to their province.

3. Courtier Recruitment 2/10. A courtier is difficult to find, these days, especially one that meets the heir's standards… the search begins, focusing first on vassals that may be raised to service!

>>38254

1/2. Konishi and his men march into Hyuga more or less unhindered, spreading the word of The Lord and bringing their matchlocks to bare. Weakened and beleaguered, absolutely taken aback by this new threat, the armies of the Ito draw back to their capital, which is quickly surrounded by the well-supplied, eager Konishi soldiers.

3. However, in the realm of anti-sabotage, Konishi's men fall flat. Ito partisans manage to poke -many- holes in their plans, and they must be redrawn!

Anti-Sabotage Tactics 2/8

>>38239

1. Oh, all the wonders that modern sciences and art could wreak, one would think that a translation book would be easy.

It's not easy. Much time and effort and paper is wasted coming up with a name and a cohesive agreement on the aesthetics of the book!

Nipponese-Spanish Translation Manual 2/12.

2/3. Silk Farm 4/10. The little silk worms must be tended to very carefully, but such gentle work pays off in dividends…

>>38064

1/2/3. Katatake's strategic prowess and his utter slaughter of the Inaba forces beforehand mean that, even though his army is weary, hungry and battered, the occupation of the Inaba capital goes smoothly. Resistance is minimal, and the local lord bows his neck…

Lose 200 Ashigaru Spears.

Lose 200 Ashigaru Bows.

Lose 40 Katana Samurai.

Gain [Inaba, Level 2] - Rice Paddies, Coastal Village, Magistrate's Office.

1557. Summer.

The Chosokabe and the Awachi, it is said, are preparing to come to blows over the matter of rebels and land rights. The Mori and the Otomo have had their first skirmish, in which the Mori deliver a staggering defeat to their newfound rivals with utmost haste!

Meanwhile, word reaches the courts of border tensions between the lowly Oda and the Tokugawa neighboring them… will this boil over into another flashpoint? Only time will tell.

In other news, this summer is looking to be a particularly cool one…

We find ourselves very fortunate that someone has already endeavored to understand and enunciate on the Spanish language itself. Antonio de Nebrija and his Gramática de la lengua castellana will serve as an excellent guideline and supplementary text for our manuals of translation. When we are finished, I would like to write a letter to the man detailing my gratitude to him and that we will be advertising his book alongside our own and giving him a free copy for review

More than that, should he ever wish, he will find a place here at my court and good pay for his services, and the benefit of experiencing a far off land.

I'll have my available Spanish scholars look over my letter first, written in Spanish by myself of course, but my hope is it will be an acceptable letter before even then thanks to our efforts. 2/12

I need to win the hearts of the populace, weed out disloyal subjects, mop up possible remains of the Inaba army in the countryside, and restore my army to its prewar strength. Looking at the accounts, I can see that before the war, we boasted 20 Yari Cavalrymen, 84 Yari Samurai, 130 Bow Samurai, 955 Ashigaru Spears, 630 Ashigaru bows, 80 katana samurai, 2 Mangonels, and 28 war chariots.
