the company i work for uses oppenheimer. i am very new to retirement planing but i feel as though the resounding bit of advise i keep hearing people saying is to consistently keep putting money aside. Even if you can only put a little bit, do as much as to can every month.

depends on what you're trying to do.

Thanks. Was talking with a friend and he buys and sells stocks on with Fidelity. Then he cashes out into his 401k. Sounded pretty easy he even showed me how to buy and sell a stock right from my phone. I wont be putting in any money until next month after a project finishes at work.

careful with that. over confidence while trading stocks is a great way to lose a lot of money fast.

that doesn't sound right. isn't the 401k an employer thing?

I may have misunderstood what he meant. He was throughing a lot of info at me. If I sell a stock how would it be deposited to me? Bank account or something?

you have a separate account you put money into that holds both the liquid money and the stocks you buy with it. there are also a set of tax rules and forms you'll have to get familiar with.
keep in mind that companies like Fidelity make everything easy because the more you're engaged with the platform and trading stocks the more money they make. there's a good body of research showing that the best way for consumers to use the stock market is to just buy a single "basket" or ETF of every stock available and leave it alone. no need to time your trades and definitely no need to check how they're doing on your phone.
