Going to live on the streets soon till I get emergency housing. Has anyone else had any experience living on the streets, particularly around Brisbane?

I have lived out of a car before and would do it again before sharehousing again.

I have never been to Brissy but you have to know where the free showers are. Beaches are your best bet. Recharge your phone etc at a library like a smelly backpacker.

Woolworths has cooked chickens and baked potato or potato bake most afternoons. That stuff is more wholesome than takeaway.

Cooking on the streets is hard because you get noticed.

Are you sleeping in a car or actually on the streets?

I don't know your situation but have you tried finding a cash job (who cares how jewed and low paid) and looking for short term accomodation through gumtree or similar? You sometimes get good deals.

A good tip is to air your clothes every chance you get so you don't end up with that musty hobo smell.

Years ago when i was younger i was bumming around Brisbane on the streets, fucking would not wish it on my worse enemy, can barely sleep at nights on park benches or cardboard boxes, always thinking of how ill get my next meal without relying to much on soup kitchens or meals on wheels and you're always up against the dangers of young people late at night, walk up and beat the living shit out of ya. This was going back 2002, i eventually found cheap boarding with a backpacker resort in Fortitude Valley and South Brisbane, stayed there for as much as i could afford to stay on the dole. Eventually got a full time cleaning job with shopping center and sometimes even slept in their utility shed to save a bit of cash so i could get into private rental. Took me about 6 months of working before a real estater would look at my application for a rental. From my whole experience it is literally the hard road you will be facing but always remember there is help out there along your journey and should accept any help where possible. I wish ye the best of luck and more importantly try and stay safe out on the streets.

Some homeless guy unlocks the cigarette butt collectors on the bins to fish for tobacco, so if you're a smoker you can engage in territorial warfare with him for butts I guess.

I used to see people sleep at the park next to the casino so that might be safe. Honestly though if you're young and good looking, why not just spread your cheeks for some old man for awhile. Be homeless in style for a few months until you can save up some shekels.

And don't shit on stairwells like the other homeless people do.

A lot easier to find cash-in-hand work out west, certainly. It's history out there of itinerant workers. Go get a swag. (I once stayed at a place near Charleville with an empty shearer's quarters, too..)
