There's more than one virtue. In the west there are the old world virtues, bravery/courage, resilience, heroism, respect for one's betters... the sort of things in a King Arthur book. They're aspirational, and that it's hard to be any of these things for any length of time. But these are the things you see declining in society, Japan only excepted by lower levels of immigration I guess.
