Got off work, came home, burnt the last of my weed from California and am sipping on some rum while I work on the lesson plan for the next few months. They gave me only upperclassmen again this year, but I'm also teaching a Physics class 5th period, and I can't reuuse my English lesson plan from last year for them. We're currently dealing with something like a deficit of 4000 teachers statewide. It's in our contracts that our degree doesn't determine our subject. We teach what we're required to teach, with preferences of course, and being a second year teacher they let me keep mostly my subject and asked if I could handle a first year physics class. I don't try to make waves at work, so I told them sure.

In most cases your English teacher does have formal education in English and much the same for all subjects, but in states with lots of teacher seats needing to be filled it's pretty much standard that a math teacher might have to teach bio or chem or something for a year.

I've never understood being allowed to roll without the same gear. If you're in gi and they're not or vice versa there are some noteworthy advantages/disadvantages. In casual rolling it's pretty negligible, but that shit wouldn't fly in competition.

It's kind of just part of the job. I knew what I was getting in to, just biding my time for twenty years before I can move on to Uni and write full time. It's an empty of kind of inevitability.

I only participated in competition twice, the first of which I was eliminated in the first round. I'd only been part of my dojo for half a year or so.

The second was a little better. I placed third and still have the metal somewhere in my office.

I only ever wore gi. The dojo my sister and I attended was one of the four big gyms that participated and helped sponsor the local competitions every year so they were pretty no nonsense. I moved to the adult class at twelve because there was a large difference in how they were conducted and were more competition and form oriented and I wasn't there to break some wimpy pieces of plywood, I wanted to learn how to hurt people in the event I needed to. In the adult class you were penalized with wall sits, push ups, kicks, form recitation or whatever the instructor felt that day if you didn't arrive to class in gi. They weren't hardasses by any means. The sensei's were great people and the classes were personable but competition was always a focus.
