There are some contenders like Dezaki, but I actually might go as far as saying Shinbou is my favorite. Compared to a lot of other notables with a distinct style in the industry (Miyazaki, Oshii, Anno, Kon, Yuasa, etc) there's no feeling in Shinbou-directed series like he's trying to be an auteur in a collaborative industry. He's shown a great range in the kind of material he can work well with and I think it's because his work philosophy is centered on giving the audience what they want and doing it with flair rather than an obsession with advancing his 'art'. Also unlike almost all the ones mentioned above he actually produced proteges who could carry on his style. Dezaki I also feel like was a director who understood all this pretty well, and it isn't surprising that Shinbou derived a lot from him.
