What's the most "straight-faced" mecha war show out there? As in the most grounded story with actually sensible battles between belligerents and the least amount of usual "anime" plot in it (no plotshielded superhero MC who screams the names of his attacks and plays one-man-army with his donut steel mech to save the day)? Is 8th MS Unit a good pick?

I just want something that focuses on the battles rather than politics and excessive character focus.

It's good, not exactly 100% realistic and plot-armor-less, but worth watching. You probably won't like the final epilogue episode, though.

War in the Pocket and Stardust Memory are a bit better in this regard.

Also I'd recommend the MS IGLOO ones, they are CGI but they are quite solid and probably have the most "grounded" combat in the entire franchise after War in the Pocket.

That said, it's better to watch the entire UC Gundam in production order rather than to watch only some OVAs.

As for other sruff, can't really think of something non-Gundam and "real-combat" focused right now, the ones coming to mind are the M.D. Geist OVAs that have little character interaction focus but they are fun, and Gasaraki.

Now that I think about it, Armored Trooper VOTOMS may also fit what you need.

I guess you would like Muv Luv Alternative and Schwarzesmarken animeys, too, but these more about mecha vs aliens than mecha vs mecha.

I have to add that "military robot" anime without politics or character focus are very rare in general, some of the titles I have listed in this post and in my post above do include these elements, but it's not what those shows are entirely about.
