The movie had a plotline where they revealed shipgirls turn into abyssals when sunk and vice versa. Shimakaze may have been an abyssal before, possibly several times. Kankolle is a fucked up cycle of infinite war caused by the regrets/desires of the original warships and their crews and the suffering generated when they're sunk. But it's also cute!

The TV anime wasn't amazing but I felt the movie built upon it in an interesting way. Honestly the game itself wasn't great so the anime is arguably the better way to experience the franchise besides fapping to the doujin.

considering they had literally no story to work with beyond "there's some girls and they are ships and they fight these other girls who are also ships but evil" the TV anime did a good job of CGDCT.

the movie played as an action film but ended up being a mystery whose big reveal was in the first act yet limped on for the other two acts to some sort of bland acceptance by the cast and no payoff for the audience. at least it had good production values.
