I love PriPara, but I definitely prefer Aikatsu. I think it's partly because I followed Aikatsu from middle of S1 all the way to the end week by week. Whereas with PriPara, while I watched it from when it started airing, I wasn't confident enough to watch it raw at the time, and once subs began to slog it became hard to keep up with and I pretty much stopped watching for a whole year, eventually getting caught up in early S3. And I never finished IT, although I do want to go back and watch the rest at some point. But even more than that, I probably just prefer the laidback feel of the original Aikatsu.
I don't think I can watch Lily lose the S4 selection again. I also highly doubt Ako ever got the love she deserved in the remainder of S2.

They dropped the ball on all the supporting cast of Akari gen. After an initial few episodes with Juri, Rin, and sort of but not really Madoka doing their own thing, they just shelved them entirely and refocused exclusively on Luminas. I don't know why, since they had it right in S1/2 by juggling everyone with relatively equal focus, but it is what it is.
I'm glad Madoka didn't get more screentime. I really don't like her. She's a knockoff Otome but with none of the outwardly positive traits that make her endearing. I rather dislike how long-running series assume you are 100% familiar with the franchises basic tenements and heavily gloss over things to "get to the meat" of it, as it were, upon reboot. They didn't explain what Aikatsu was, the school's purpose, any of the VR dancing segments, or anything else. It's just assumed you know already from previous installments. It's bad writing. It's been irking me for a few episodes now, but I think I finally determined that I don't like Yume. There's nothing wrong with her, and she's even straddling the line on being cute sometimes, but at the same time she's incredibly plain and boring in spite of the S4 singing her praises for no good reason. It pisses me off. It pisses me off even more when I think about how I'm going to need to sit through 999999999999999+ more episodes of her "improving" until she actually does walk the walk when I just don't give care and would rather watch anyone else on the cast. Stars is fantastic. I particularly like the art direction. It's the first Aikatsu where everyone looks and feels like JC all the time. Both OG and Friends has their moments where the impression is sold, but overall the cast comes off as JKs. Maybe it's the proportions. Stars have bigger and rounder heads, smaller limbs relatively, and the adults all obviously tower over them (for nip standards.) Meanwhile Friends and OG have the direct opposite excepting rare scenes that look a bit out of place. This is very important to my viewing experience and I am grateful Stars consistently delivers. Everyone is so tiny and cute I love it.

Oh lordy, this is ridiculously silly. I'm always on the edge of my seat to see what kind of rabbit they'll pull out of their hat next to up the scale on what "Aikatsu" means. Mountain climbing, ostrich riding, jogging, chopping down trees, and now entering into a magical idol realm. Is there anything Aikatsu can't do?
They also tweaked 6cm no keshiki. Added more sound and visual effects and changed the camera angles a bit. I'm a big fan of the showy danmaku so it's much more impressive now. I noticed it long ago, but I really like that the staff always improve and adjust the songs right up until the end. Pripara, for instance, just rolls the same footage all the time with "maybe" a different Making Drama every here and there.

Theater-related episodes continue to be the best. I'd really like it if the staff diversified a bit more. We get theater episodes every here and there, and episodes that are theater-esque, such as when they play a song over scenes as in the Chocolate Detective, but where are the dancing episodes? Where are beauty/runway scenes, or singing? You could say that every single one contains elements of all of those things with the CGI parts, but I'd like to see dedicated episodes every here or there for each of the topics, like they do sometimes with Theater.
Interspersed between all the random Aikatsu and school hijinks, it'd make for a nice change of pace. Also that way they wouldn't have to do so many dumb competitions.

Rola felt like Mio to me in a lot of sense, just without that huge of a gap between her an Yume compared to Mio and Aine.
Her chance was stolen by the magic powerup, and then she couldn't improve as quickly as Yume. Her role never became what it could have become, maybe that's part of reason why they made Friend in a way that they don't forget about the cool type girl this time.
There's nothing to do, but accept it now, and appreciate what you will get coming your way of her, at times they will remember giving her a bit of glory.

Amazing! This is the first episode where I thought Aine wasn't a complete drag on her partner and actually had some measure of Aikatsu potential. I was bracing for more ear rape when the duet of Identity started as I rather like that song, but it was actually surprisingly good. Even better than the original (just kidding that's not possible Oohashi Ayaka is too good.) Maybe sound direction is making her sing awfully for some perceived balance with Mio? Maybe the seiyuu has gotten more lessons in the meantime? I don't know but I hope she keeps it up!
I don't want Mio to be taught something by Karen. It's cheap to have these two drastically different characters learn and grow via the same method. I haven't researched it, and only time will tell, but I feel like there's less songs, variety, and lower quality across the board because of it. With idols singing, you could rest assured that songs were always scrump, there was a constant influx of new songs, and all was good. Perhaps there's a different composer and lyricist for the seiyuu songs than the idol groups had? I don't know.
I think a nice compromise that would also net them extra shekels is using idols for the anime, but selling seiyuu sung versions of the songs alongside the regular CDs. Double dip, as it were, and give the best of both worlds.

I might agree if Stars itself did a better job. The romance basically disappeared halfway through since the members of M4 were about as interesting as a paper bag. Actually making them interesting would take screen time away from the main characters, which would then make Aikatsu less about its core concept (girls doing idol things). It would require a major shift that would get the series instantly flattened by live-action teen-oriented television that already fills that niche: romance dramas are the bread and butter of actual idols, who naturally dominate the space.

That's the only issue it had. The first 2 cours were chalk-full of M4 presence and budding relationships. It was rather exquisite, but then they got cold feet and dropped it like a hot potato until it suddenly resurrected itself at the end. In that brief time, where the writers could run free, it was magnificently done. M4 were cool, getting adequate screentime to grow as characters (some obviously more than others), and brought another much needed avenue of rivalry and character dynamics to the pussy party's antics, which get samey after 99999999999 episodes. It was great stuff, though mishandled. OGkatsu had an identical issue with Ichigo and Nao.
You're overstating how much screentime M4 would require to become more interesting characters. They were already well on their way with the little bit they had, until episode 35, roughly. If staff had stayed the course instead of abandoning them entirely, then by the end of the series they would be bonafide cool dudes without any particular devotion given to them.

I remember when the principal in Aikatsu fed Ichigo some line about relationships that felt like it had come out of nowhere: I'm pretty sure that was tossed in because of the uproar about Minami Minegishi crying and shaving her hair as an apology for daring to date.

Just include more scenes like Subaru constantly teasing Yume, Akari vising Sena's house while he's sick, Ichigo and Nao hanging at the riverside doing shit I can't remember, etc etc. All of those scenes (and more) are enough to spark fans imaginations. Including them does not mean there is a need to turn things into cheap shitty romance drama, such as Pretty Rhythm S2 with the chinks, nor does it take away from the core of the series.
If you're worried about consistency, or cheap drama, then don't worry. All the Big Three little girl shows have proven themselves over the years to drop subplots and drama willy-nilly when it doesn't prove suitable.
