7f8d69 (4) No.27449[Watch Thread][Show All Posts]

We are a team of ambitious game enthusiasts in desperate need of an artist for our current project a 2D Action/Puzzle Platformer.

We are flexible and open to different art styles, whether it be a pixel or drawn aesthetic, it doesn't matter as long as we like it.

We need you for:

Backgrounds

Sprite Animation

Level Assets

Promotional Art

You get the jist

You'll need a skype and google account for communication and file-sharing.

I've tried to keep this post short but if you have any questions just ask and if you're interested add me on skype

cc6f82 (4) No.27450>>27452

terrible job advert, 1/10, one point for even bothering with incomplete requirements. you didn't even include contact details.

the most you're going to get are the desperate and uninitiated, and then you're just putting everyone's time and effort at risk.

skype's in the email field bro

and those are the complete requirements, but you never know what we might need an artist for so I was being a bit casual with my wording

and if you as an artist on a game dev board you should probably have some idea of what's expected of your talents

cc6f82 (4) No.27453>>27454

>>27452

you're missing job scope which should probably be up front for an unpaid position. if you're expecting 20 hours a week of work the sooner you filter out people only willing to put up 10 the better. also stuff like availability and maybe some software familiarity, but I guess you're not getting enough applicants for that to be a problem.

the real problem is you've giving artists zero reason to contact you in the first place; you're not showing any of your game or even giving any clues that you have your shit together. just because you put a sign up that says "looking for attractive women, please call this number" doesn't mean the qualified applicants that see it will call, in fact nobody would call. if you're not buying the work you're selling the opportunity, and you're selling by saying how much you want their money.

but I'm guessing your attitude is that you'd be lucky to find a single applicant so you'll take whatever you can get.

You could have just asked these things in the form of a question

like I said I was trying to keep the OP short and sweet, we have a whole thread to discuss specifics

Firstly, the team is decentralized and most are in college so progress is expected to be slow and steady, it's a marathon, not a sprint

and to be completely honest I don't know what kind of man hours it takes to produce these varying assets

but really I care more about the end result than how long it takes, it's up to you to decide how much you want to put in as long as I get at least something usable out of it

the only result I could be disappointed in is no result

In terms of software familiarity, like art style, where ever your strength lies is fine with us, aseprite? cool, photoshop? no problem, whatever get's the job done best

Want to know about the game? Just ask

Song of the Moon is a 2D platformer with puzzle and action elements still in very early development. Inspired by ancient mythology the player controls a wolf gifted with the power to "shift" between the physical and spirit worlds, out to rescue the moon from the underworld. The game seeks to mix a heavy atmosphere with satisfying and robust combat, and enjoyable platforming and environmental puzzles.

And yes I'm willing to give anyone a chance

Should have put that in the OP. That actually sounds very interesting. The term "puzzle platformer" when alone gives me a bad mental image, because that tends to describe boring flash game style things that revolve completely around one single gimmick and the entire game and concept has nothing more to it.

I've never worked on a team project or completed a game before though, so I'm not confident I could do everything that would be required of me, especially if the project relies solely on me for all the art and design.

It's a "idea guy wants to profit off of the work and hard-won talent of artists/programmers while contributing nothing to the project other than a few paragraphs of inspirational pablum and his keen management skills" thread.

Thanks, but no thanks.

Oh shit nigga just called me out on being a talentless hack!

Sound the alarms!

But to be serious for a moment

We're just a few guys from a skype group who one day said "hey we should make a game" and we haven't let go of that ambition even as that ambition has continued to change shape and grow

From the get go we had a programmer, a writer (who soon after found us a composer), and even an artist, who unfortunately flaked out of existence

I joined in for the heck of it, I knew I had little to offer in specifics, but if I could support a few friends why not right?

Since then I've been able to help here and there, an idea or two (dozen), some writing and direction, crack the whip a few times sure, and I crack jokes, apparently I'm funny enough (and tough skinned enough) to handle PR and outreach, especially in this trying time looking for a replacement artist

Point is in no way am I in charge, I didn't bring these guys together but I believe in them and their potential so much I'm willing to bet my own, admittedly half-baked, projects on our success as a team

Because if successful we can accomplish so much more as a team than any of us could ever hope to alone

Except for our composer, who is so wicked talented I'm surprised he puts up with us

How's that for some inspirational pablum mutha fuckaaaahhh

Unprofessional. And needlessly combative. I wouldn't hire you for my PR, let alone anything else.

If you want to attract artists, you should make your game first. Use placeholder assets and produce at least an alpha build.

Stop trying to talk around the fact that you don't actually do anything. If you're trying to make a platformer, then you need to at the very least be designing stages. Doing something and showing what you've done goes a lot farther than any amount of hot air you can push out of your face hole.

If you're just hanging around bullshitting and telling other people to do stuff, you're not helping. You owe the project some work, or at least the dignity of leaving it to the people who are actually creating anything for it.

Man I didn't expect 8chan to be so uptight about everything, reddit sure but I thought you guys knew how to lay back, chill, and shitpost once in a while

Personally as a consumer candidness goes miles farther than uptight lip service and fancy weasle words

And we are designing levels, although it appears that job has landed in my lap after everyone played hot potato with it, and my top priority right now is getting an artist

Either way development's slow and I should at least be trying to complete the team

Also people are sold on what they see, we could have the next Braid in our pockets and no ones going to give a fuck if it looks like a pile of turds, maybe other devs would give us a pity golf clap but an artist isn't gonna take notice and jump on our dicks for the chance to work with us

Yeah, nah, fuck off cunt. Do you have anything to show that would actually make anyone want to work with you on this, or do you just have an autistic "design document" that's a few disjointed lines of trite plot?

>le tuff loeve 2 motivate u :^)

Gotta be honest, I have no idea what you're getting at

Not sure what I could show without art

Last time I checked our programmer was using a shit drawing of a wolf we stole off google for a PC, and a terrible meme for platforms

Also it's still very early in development so he's mainly dealing with basic shit like PC controls, it is a platformer after all so that shit's important, but not much to look at

But he'd really like some real sprites to work with and I'd prefer I got him some before Christmas

cc6f82 (4) No.27492>>27493

>>27485

honestly I don't know what you're expecting at this point. you've spent most of your time here explaining why your team wants an artist, instead of why an artist would want to work for your team. you just came in here with not much more than "artists needed, no pay" and this thread has been pulling teeth getting why at anyone would want to do it and you're still being selfish about it.

if you want people to take you seriously, you have to take your job as PR/HR seriously. just like any other field it they take training and knowledge. I'm guessing you're still in school, go find out who the relevant profs are and get some advice out of them, 101 books in the library might be worth while as well. not to mention the tons of content on the internet freely available, I guess antagonizing an image board into telling you what you're doing wrong is a part of that too.

also your team isn't going to hit it out of the park on it's first attempt, a 2D platformer is already way too ambitious. just treat the project as a experiment and learn what you can from it.

Jesus Christ is it a board prerequisite to shove a large iron rod up your ass?

Stop being so serious, this is 8chan for crying out loud

I came here because we're a bunch of faggots who shit talk in between working and I could do with an artist that can handle that

Like seriously all of us here in this thread are a bunch of nameless faceless messages on an IMAGEBOARD, yet your acting like I'm on stage speaking at a convention

Why an artist would want to work for your team?

That's a great question could it possibly be that I'm in a position where there isn't a good answer?

We're all Amateurs

We have no money

We are still very very early on

And as you rightfully mentioned, it's very ambitious first a first project, downscaling is likely inevitable

The only reason an artist would have is that they like the idea a lot and would like to see it come to life

Y'know what is guess I did forget one thing

If you join our team I will build a wall at the US/Mexican border

It'll be a great wall, it'll be a tall, impressive, beautiful wall

And it'll be paid for by the Mexican government :^)

If you're concerned about anonymous image board culture, you should know that it has always included "don't act like you're underage." If image boards are all about herping and derping to you, then it would be for the best if you confined yourself to /b/.

Your attitude has been consistently that of a teenager who is not willing to admit that he is just being an idea guy. You aren't contributing to the project. You aren't paying anyone to contribute to it. You have no business claiming to be on the development team until you actually do something to advance the game toward completion.

I am going to say this again and I am going to be perfectly clear about it. Your first priority is not to find an artist. Absolutely everything about your game can function without the presence of anything more than placeholder graphics. You do not NEED an artist, you WANT an artist. Everybody does. Everyone wants to see images depicting their ideas. Artists are in very high demand because of this. That means they get to take their pick of the many "projects" that are supposedly in development, and it doesn't take being burned very many times before the good ones get picky about it.

Do your part first. Design most if not all of the stages and complete an alpha build of the game using placeholder graphics. Have something to showcase to any prospective artists whom you hope to recruit so that they can reasonably expect you to finish your work before they commit themselves to the project.

You, specifically, need to spend less time bullshitting and clowning around in an attempt to be some kind of retarded offspring between a jester and a muse. There is no "entertain the other members of the project who actually do real work" job title in any development studio and it sure as shit won't fit in the credits. If you are going to be on writing or stage design, then you better start cracking open some notepads and image editing programs and making something useful. As it stands, you are distracting your team and slowing progress. Stop shooting the shit and start taking some tasks off of others' plates.

If my involvement bothers you so much remove me from the equation, half of these posts have been about me and not the team, it's stupid

So just pretend for a moment I'm just a guy doing he's friends a favor by trying to find them an artist, 'kay

And our programmer would disagree with you, without some visual input he's struggling to get on with anything beyond the character's basic movement, platformers are a tricky thing to get right

Is he wrong to be thinking like that?

Maybe, I don't fucking know, I don't know anything about programming

Also everyone's in college, so development is always gonna be slow as molasses, this is the one month when we're all out on summer vacation and have time to crack down and put some work in, so it would have been nice if we had an artist when it really would have counted

PS you guys are still uptight and boring, how are you in such a creative field when you lack humor to this degree? :^P

Here are two images that any retard could produce with a few seconds in any image editing program. The first is a crescent. Does your platformer utilize any playable or enemy characters who have melee attacks with bladed weapons? There is your placeholder for a slashing animation. The second image is of a stick figure performing a pushing action, in the highly likely event that your playable character needs to push anything. Once again, a few seconds in any image editing program has provided you with a functional placeholder for a pushing sprite. This kind of stuff should be within even your otherwise lacking capabilities and should be sufficient for your programmer to establish his hitboxes. Once your game is playable, you can recruit an artist to replace placeholders such as these with better-looking graphics.

I will repeat myself for the last time. You do not need an artist at this stage of development. It is far more important for you to complete the game/stage design and write any text that will be appearing in your game. Visual and audio assets are just there to enrich the experience. They should be the last items on your agenda, not the first. Between the game/stage design, writing, and drafting placeholder assets, that's three things you could be doing to help the team to complete this project and earn you a place in the credits. Do that. Worry about the decorations on this product after it is functioning properly enough to convince a decent artist that you will see it through to completion.

Talked it over with the programmer, he's got the message

Still I find the bug up your butt really bizarre, if I thought you robots could feel emotions I'd think you were actually miffed about something

It's also fascinating how you practically took over a thread that was simply about adding another member to our band of merry men to pelt me with criticisms and advice

Don't get me wrong I appreciate both, it's just that it had little to do with what this thread was meant to facilitate

I get the idea of "setting me straight" but that and finding an artist are not mutually exclusive, yet it almost seems like you're trying to prevent an artist from being interested.

I mean shit I actually had a bite earlier on in the thread, I guess I should have pushed on it

Well either way hope your able to brush off that chip off your shoulder, and I'll be praying for ya tin man, you'll get that heart some day :^3

It's like you don't realize the purpose of a thread is to facilitate a conversation

Dude gave us advice and we took it, I actually linked our programmer and was like "Yo check it out"

And he was all "Alright I'll give it a shot"

But once again I find myself amazed by how you guys seem to be far more fascinated in me than the team or the game

How many questions have I had about the game's content? One? Maybe half a question cuss it wasn't even a question?

Is this how it feels to be a celebrity?

Feels good man
