So there was a thread asking /agdg/ fags about their opinion on Extra Cancerz, now I want to know your thoughts on Game Makers Toolkit (I'm making this distinction because of the program game maker).

Pretty decent insights into actual design philosophies used by myriads of game developers (as opposed to Extra Faggots' "THIS IS HOW ALL GAME DEVELOPMENT IS DONE" bullshit). I'm not a huge fan of videos that cover abstract concepts like design philosophies, but it's definitely the kind of thing I'd recommend to people who need inspiration when designing their games from the ground up.

He's a koolaid cuck but his game design analysis is very good nonetheless.

I wouldn't take the videos completely to heart, but they do raise interesting ideas and they work as a jumping off point design-wise.

I think his videos are pretty damn good actually. He does a good job of picking out smart game design and elaborating on them with concrete examples, and then talks about any drawbacks that the design might have. There are some videos of his I don't care for as much, like his video on morality or the Good Horror Movie one.

The former was meh because I feel like forcing morality-based decisions on a player can limit the players options and game mechanics. Usually in those scenarios you have to choose between a bad option, and a slightly less-bad option, with no possibility for the player to attempt something else. In those scenarios, the player will eventually discover the optimal solution, and then the game just becomes "How hard can I cheese this game?"

The latter, the horror movie one (I forget the name), wasn't really about gameplay so I didn't care for it. It was just another look at how devs can do different things with storytelling on vidya than other mediums.

If anyone has other suggestions for other channels like GMT I'd be glad to hear them. As far as I'm concerned GMT is one of the few good sources on game design.

game maker's toolkit, along with some of extra credit's stuff are pretty good for what they are, primers.

there isn't much you can explain in a give minute video besides a short introduction for people who didn't know the topic existed.

if you actually think the subject matter is useful then you should be googling that shit and doing some more in depth research.

lots of content under GDC and it's hit or miss, might look through them again for my favorites when I'm more drunk. also depends on what kind of game you're making.

One of his latest videos was really good imo.
