Honestly the problem can be traced all the way back to AOL (and the success of domestic ISPs in general) triggering the start of Eternal September. In general, online communities only remain good when there's a significant barrier of entry to keep out the hordes of normalfags.

E-commerce, online advertising, and the slow trend towards centralization and monopolization are just the final nails in the coffin.

All these websites start banning content because they feel their advertising revenue is threatened by moral panics. The only way to fight back is by encouraging the use of decentralized hosting solutions.
