LONG LIVE EMPEROR REIWA
We're entering a new era!
https://japan-forward.com/end-of-an-era-akihito-abdicates-as-emperor-of-japan/
>Emperor Akihito, 125th ruler on Japan’s Chrysanthemum Throne, has announced the end of his reign Tuesday, April 30, in a ceremony called Taireiseiden no Gi, which started at 5 P.M. sharp.
>After two of the sacred objects or Sanshu no Gi — the jewel, and the sword — of the Imperial Household were presented to the Emperor, Japan’s state and privy seals were also put in front of the ruler of Japan. These Imperial regalia will be presented to the new Emperor of Japan in the enthronement ceremony Wednesday morning, May 1, as a symbol of the transition.
>The ceremony took place in the prestigious Hall of Pine, or Matsu no Ma, in the Imperial Palace in Tokyo in the presence of 300 guests and was broadcast on live television.
>Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe presented a speech to thank the Emperor for praying for the citizens in time of need, for example during natural disasters, as well as conveying his respect and hopes for a fruitful future. Abe commented: “With the steps the Emperor took in mind, we want to work hard to create a future for Japan to be proud, filled with peace and prosperity.”
>Emperor Akihito then read the following speech to the guests present for the ceremony, with Empress Michiko, 84-years-old, standing by his side.
<Today, I am concluding my duties as the Emperor.
<I would like to offer my deep gratitude to the words just spoken by the Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on behalf of the people of Japan.
<Since ascending the throne 30 years ago, I have performed my duties as the Emperor with a deep sense of trust in and the respect for the people, and consider myself most fortunate to have been able to do so. I sincerely thank the people who accepted and supported me in my role as the symbol of the State.
<I sincerely wish, together with the Emperor, that the Reiwa Era which begins tomorrow, will be a stable and fruitful one, and I pray with all my heart, for peace and happiness for all the people in Japan and around the world.
>The ceremony was over in about 12 minutes.
>This is the first time in 200 years that the Emperor of Japan has abdicated. The last time was in 1817, when Kokaku stepped aside. Given the historical moment of this event, many people also crowded in front of the Imperial Palace.
>Kenneth Ruoff, a historian on the imperial family commented that the Heisei Emperor’s words were greeted with emotion, as “the Emperor is incredibly popular among the Japanese people.”
>A women interviewed on Japan’s national television NHK commented, “At this critical moment, I wanted to be here.”

No.924831
>1989 was 30 years ago
Nothing has made this more clear to me than the changing of era. I keep thinking that the end of Showa wasn't that long ago but now its too glaring to ignore. Regardless, the Heisei era saw a monumental shift in anime and obviously Japan as a whole. Among the list of big changes is the rise of digital animation and how the internet and widespread computer adoption has changed how we watch. From tape to torrent and from cel animation to full 3DCG. The Reiwa era will probably bring about an equally massive shift which we can only barely begin to imagine. Given where we were at the end of Showa and where we are now I'd wager a guess we are going to see more advanced computerization of animation. Something like AI character design, AI backgrounds, synthetic VAs, 1080 becoming base resolution, VR anime, virtual idol groups, perhaps even "heretical" stuff like physics modelling and photo-realistic environments.

Because we don't have emperors or kings.
To give a bit of history, back in Ancient times, dates were always given as "In Year 3 of the Reign of King so-and-so." And it was only after the adoption of Christianity that years became known as "Anno Domini" or "In the Year 2019 of our Lord Jesus Christ". And this became the standard because Christ was seen as the King of all mankind.
As an aside, the Roman Republic would call each year, "In the Year of the Consulship of X and Y."
Japan is so remarkably similar to Ancient Europe in many ways and this is something they kept and we lost.
They only use the Christian dates out of convenience like everyone else, but this is in reality their new year, and new era. They are in "Year 1 of the Reign of Emperor Reiwa."

Anime isn't a video game, low frame limited animation with a varying frame rate is one of the core aspects of anime.
>We dont even have 30fps animation
The standard for hand drawn animation is and has always been 24fps. If you want a higher framerate the next choice would be 48fps and not 30.
Lower frame rates give animators more control and require less frames (less work). If you want "realistic 3DPD" style movement, you can use any of the inevitable A.I. solutions to add additional frames. It's probably going to look like shit, but an A.I. is still far better than humans at doing the miniscule inbetweening that's required when doing 60 fps hand drawn animation. And there is interpolation which is still going to outperform humans at high fps inbetweening.
Most anime have a varying frame rate between 6-24 fps.

This was done with rotoscoping and by a studio with money to burn. I dont think the goal is "realistic 3DPD" movement as much as it will be that the target framerate for the medium (Im guessing VR) will be well above 60fps. That alone may necessitate high framerates at the production level.

Framerate does matter, but 24fps is fine for drawn animation. The problem arises with CG, whether on its own or mixed with 2D. Drawn animation can use distortion and motion blur to imply movement between frames in a way that cannot be straightforwardly done with CG models. Anime isn't a video game, but when it comes to the demands it places on framerate, CG is closer to video games than it is to drawn animation. For CG to look good you need a higher framerate than drawn. Which causes a big problem when you try to mix the two. Slowing down the CG makes it look jittery, speeding up the animation is expensive and time consuming, and having them at different framerates looks awful.
>If you want "realistic 3DPD" style movement
Come on now. Don't just call everything you're arguing against 3DPD. Higher framerates genuinely look better. Remember how everyone reacted to the excess of frames in the early episodes of Slow Start?

That's rotoscoped. And to be honest I find it questionable if taking real life footage and drawing on top of it can be called animation. You're essentially just adding a 2D filter on life action footage. Kaguya is produced at 24 fps, and your "fluid" dance scene is largely "animated" in 2s (12fps).
>>924956
> The problem arises with CG, whether on its own or mixed with 2D. Drawn animation can use distortion and motion blur to imply movement between frames in a way that cannot be straightforwardly done with CG models.
Dstortion and motion blur is what's used in most if not all CGI movie by Pixar and most high budget Hollywood productions. The standard for film as a whole has been and is in many cases still 24fps. Download yourself https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRpXRkSCOTI, it's a short by Pixar. Or look at a more recent Pixar teaser/short, everything is done in 24fps. Any anon should at least once look at an anime, anime CGI, game footage and modern Western movie CGI frame by frame.
How long a single frame is perceived by the viewer has an enormous impact on the viewer. All the techniques used in traditional anime animation are to be used with material that's intended to run at 24fps (even when the actual animation is done at a lower framerate).

If everything was properly organized then it should be almost as simple as hitting ctrl+H. Developers should have written the necessary date-handling code well in advance and simply used a placeholder string until the era name was announced.
In that case the main delay would come from long chains of dependencies each needing to be updated. If one team of developers fail to push out timely updates, it could cause delays for all of the down-stream developers too.

It's れいわ.
But's it's also rei-wa. 令 is the rei and 知 is the wa.

Rei-wa is correct. They pronounced "wrong" due to the song metrics.

Only in theory. If you listen carefully you'll notice that there's a lot less separation between syllables than some textbooks would have you believe. It's especially common in the case of い following any other syllable.

Actually, in the case of い following an え sound, it becomes an elongated え sound where the え lasts for two syllables. It's the same thing with お and う coming after it, which is why 東京 and 東方 sound the way they do.
Gaijin can't into elongated vowels.

I wasn't talking about the elongated vowels. Those are another special case, but at least most textbooks cover those.
The sounds get blurred together in the case of あい, おい, etc. too. Just listen out for it in words like 下さい. It's incredibly common.

That's kind of weird. Didn't it use to be the other way around, where everything in Japan belonged to the Emperor? Doesn't sound like that great of a life. They're basically pets of the Japanese state.

True enough, but seeing the way things are going and with nobody suggesting any alternatives where neither of those are true, I'd rather be in that situation as an Emperor than as a subject.

Ownership is always subject to the whims of the powerful. Your "property" is nothing more than writing on paper or electrons in a datacenter.
I imagine that there would be more public outcry if the Emperor had his not-technically-property seized than if your bank decided to delete your account balance and repossess your house. Hell, you could even have all of your property legally stolen via civil forfeiture.

It's true for every man. We don't own anything, we just lend things to give them away after death and our fates belong to the gods.

Since early Japanese history, it's part of both their law and own 'mandate of heaven' that everything in Japan belongs to them.
If there's any kind of ownership there, it's an indefinite right of use the crown concedes to the person/company.
In the past, this was serious - nowdays it's a mere formality.

I guess generally not giving a shit about that is a big part of Japanese history. Sengoku was the most prominent case but I doubt it was the only one.

Japanese history is kind of weird, although it's mostly because we don't have accurate records from the beginning. Basically all we know is that the island had a Siberian population of hunter-gatherers (the jomon), then around 250 AD migrants from the Korean peninsula (the yayoi) appeared, and they started building their cities and whatnot. Next up it's after 1000 AD and Japan is pretty much an unified country* with a highly sophisticated urban culture, and the emperor is already more of a high priest of sorts than a supreme leader of the country. It doesn't help that their myths say the first emperor founded the country in 660 BC, well before the appearance of the yayoi.
*Yes, they didn't rule all of modern day Japan at that point, as they were pushing northward rather slowly over the centuries. But it was still one country growing bigger.
