Let me preface this by noting that I am a huge sucker for medieval fantasy and so I was optimistic about arslan senki.

The first 10 episodes were mediocre. However I found myself attracted to some of the characters. I also stuck around for the ships.

The last 15 episodes felt like a chore to watch. I regret wasting my time on this. Literally just skip straight to the doujins if you're considering watching this.

Alright, I'll elaborate. First of all, the characters in this were comically bland and cliche. Extremely poorly developed, especially considering how long the 'runway' was. The plot was Hollywood-tier. Although this isn't something I value, visual production quality was dreadful.

The good: some of the music was okay I guess. I like Kalafina. Some of the males are attractive. That's basically it.

Take away: don't watch this overrated garbage.

I am disappointed.

Akatsuki no Yona came out at around the same time, if memory serves, and was a much more enjoyable watch.

Yeah I absolutely loved Akatsuki no Yona!

Why do they keep adapting garbage like this? It's not like it's cheap to animate shit. Wouldn't they earn more if they adapted better written stories?

Try watching the OVAs instead, those were paced better since they didn't have to make two seasons.

I might give it a shot in the future. I have them downloaded.

I'm just feeling super burnt out on the series at the moment

Watch the original OVAs and then come back.

Wait, wasn't this the one set in the Not-Ottoman empire where the MC had a get out of jail magic eagle horde?

Nice blogpost and reddit spacing.

I was pretty interested in the series when I first heard about it but as it kept getting less realistic and and turning into more of a musou playthrough it kept losing me. By the time literal magic was introduced I was watching more out of morbid curiosity than anything else. Even knowing now that it's a dumb ass fantasy story for kids there's still objectionable shit, like how the main cast takes a massive detour to help some Carthaginians or whatever they were supposed to be while their main enemy just sits on his ass doing nothing.

If they had gone full-on fantasy it might have been something, but they keep it just realistic enough to be frustrating when magic asspulls do happen or when spear dude kills 1000 generic mob soldiers by himself with no resistance. And the plot itself is predictable and not very clever. I did find it pretty impressive that they actually had a scene where dumbass kid prince kills a bunch of slave owners to release the slaves and the slaves immediately get pissed with him for taking away their livelihoods. It was an unexpected bit of depth and realism in an otherwise childish story.

Couldn't have said it better than OP said. Actually it took me 2 years to finish this because i always just put it back on hold after episode or two and watched something better instead.

That's shoukoku no altair, this one's about Persians.

I'm not sure if the complaints are deserved here. This is an epical legend so a single guy killing hundreds, deformed giant circus freaks and magic are all normal, aside from magic I think Kingdom has all of that too.

Then you'd be surprised to know that this is originally a novel written by the author of LoGH.

LoGH is a heroic epic as well but has that depth and realism, the most important 3 characters in the story die untimely deaths and no one is ever safe.

In Arslan senki though, we know from the start that it is Arslan's story, for the kind of story it is I don't think it's executed that badly.

It had much better writing.

The creators of the series extremely over estimated the success of Arslan. The novel is truly amazing worthy of being among the great literary classic. Unfortunately they decided to make the anime a direct adaptation and it failed among the mass audiences because the book has to a lot of nuance, subtlety, and character development that comes from tons and tons of character dialogue. Similarly to .hack//SIGN.

Fans of the books loved the series. People who played Arslan Musou first also loved, can't explain why though. But, people who went into this series expecting Record of Lodoss War kind of development or story progress were really disappointed.

Also, it's Persian (Pre-Islam) fantasy not Medieval.
