I think anime is still niche to a degree. From my experience there's a sizeable amount of people in their twenties who have seen an anime or two but it's always the super well-known entry level stuff like FMA, SnK and Death Note at max. Most will never go beyond that, stilling holding views that anime art is "weird" or "creepy" and you'll quickly discover these things if you try to ask them what shows they like. On a slightly unrelated note though, I've noticed that the word "weeb" has been picked up by semi-normalfag / cyborg types in real life. I watched it with subs, and later re-watched it with the dub-crew commentary. It was nice seeing how much effort they put into translating everything and how closely the studio worked with them. They actually received direct orders on how to translate certain key words, and they had to translate as the show came out. Redubbing seems like it's going to be the new trend for classic anime. It would make sense with how their trying to get certain VA ousted now. Makes them able to get rid of those they don't like and also earn money again for playing the same roles or geting their friends paid as well.
The only way I'll accept redubbing is if the original dub sucked or fixing translation errors. I barely if ever watch dub versions now. The only recent dub I saw the 2 new FLCL seasons because of the Toonami deal. I might go back once in a while to experience 90s to early 2000s just because I grew up with it. I still go back to the Berserk bloopers every few months for a chuckle. Subs are the way to go in the end. The problem arises when forced to do these things, they are always hurt, and hurt people around them. But every time they do it also, they start to get praise. This is Anno in 1.0 and during NGE TV. Also, when he went to Tokyo to work on Macross and Naussicaa after Daicon. People were always around him, "animate more, work more, do more". Not to say he didn't enjoy animating, but it became a job he had to put on his Eva mask to do, that is, interact with the rest of the world.
Feeling more confident, he keeps getting into the Eva and does what needs to be done. He finds comrades and fame and affection. He trusts those around him and becomes the star of the show. This is the majority of 2.0 and most of the TV series. It's also Anno coming back to his friends to join Gainax when it was created. They make Royal Space Force and Gunbuster out of passion.
However, there's the ending of 2.0, the ending of the TV series, and what almost became the end of Gainax, Nadia. Shinji has to confront a dear friend, and thinking he knows what he has to do, goes against what everyone says and does what he thinks is right, what everyone has been telling him to do all along: He pilots the Eva and gets to work, and causes Third Impact.
NGE TV ending was slapped together because Anno trusted fans to wait for the movie, which had the biggest budget out of anything he had ever worked on before. It did not go over well and the death threats and all that came pouring in. Industry people would often say, "I want to do an anime like Eva, but without that ending." The ending became a mocking point thereafter.
Nadia was a train wreck on multiple fronts that almost killed the company and Anno was forced to steer that ship. Miyazaki, his mentor, was planning on directing it before production stuff messed that up, so the whole project was just sort of shat onto Gainax. I don't want to get into the full mess that was Nadia production here, but it was bad and Gainax was almost bankrupted. More than that, it severely divided the once-close friends. Maeda left to make Gonzo and Okada was dethroned as president. There was constant fighting and bickering between the guys who just wanted to have fun at SF cons, and Anno felt the purity of the group was severed. They would even shut Anno and Okada out of any and all conversation about future projects. They even fired most of their animation staff at this point, the casualties of the Impact.
3.0 was Anno in this state of despair. He showed everyone what happens when he just gets in the robot and gets to work. He trusted those around him and now they are shutting him out. "Don't pilot the Eva, Shinji." Just shut up and animate when we decide you can.
It's also the fans at that point. They don't want Anno to be changing Eva anymore, and just shit on NGE TV ending, the Third Impact. Then Shinji goes to Gendo with Rei and he wants Shinji to pilot the Eva, to keep going and take the Rebuilds as far as he can. This is another type of fan.
Urged by Kaworu, Shinji decides once more. One more Rebuild. 3.0. Pilot it once more with Kaworu and save it all from his mistake. This is the making of EoE.
Legend has it that Anno went out drinking with a friend and they got super drunk and complained about the state of Gainax together after Nadia. That friend suggested, "Hey, why don't you make a TV anime like this, with a wide mass appeal, and use that to get Gainax up and running again?" Anno went back to the studio the next day with a huge smile and announced that they would begin working on an amine immediately. That is the birth of NGE. That is Kaworu convincing Shinji to pilot it.
However, now we know how it all turns out. The horrible tragedy repeats itself again and again and again and again and Shinji is left a shallow husk of a human being, unable to carry on to finish 4.0.
This is also why it seems Rebuild is a sequel of the original series. It literally is.

It's a sliding scale of how far you're removing the presentation from the original intent of the creators. Watching and understanding something in its original language is obviously ideal. Translating that in any way is already going to mean you lose some of the nuance along the way, and we all know how shit some sub groups and official localizations are, nut using subtitles while preserving the original acting is the next best thing since at least you have the performances as they were meant to be given to go on to clue you in on the emotion, timing and other non-verbal parts of communication even if you don't understand what's actually being said. Even if one of the VAs can't sing, not every VA has to be able to do so, because not every VA did in the original, or the original dub. The only reason I can imagine would be that a significant portion of their VAs can't do so for some reason, which doesn't make sense, because it is generally an expectation that a VA can sing.

I find the worst part of the dub is that it's very literal with no emotion. The VAs legitmately sound like they're reading off the piece of paper.
