The problem with Hugtto is the execution of many things, especially the latter half, but on the topic of male cures: People weren't mad because Henri was just male, but because he also happened to be a humongous faggot and blatantly so, going as far as repeatedly crossdressing at school without any irony or joke about it. Not only that, but Toei decided to pull the trigger on such a one-of-a kind possibility on a character that in the grand scheme of the show isn't even really involved with the Precure at all or does anything of note before that point (aside from Homare's rivalry right at the beginning, but we're way past those episodes at that point), whereas characters that did much more (male or female) get fucking nothing (Yui, Regina, Julio to state a few).
What's even more baffling is that a male Cure wasn't really necessary at all when we barely have allies that fight alongside them without being Cures or at least aren't one-time things like Cure Sebastian which honestly deserved to show up more. Hell, Ruru being an actual Cure wasn't necessary even, they could've given her Riderman status since she's already a fucking robot and doesn't need extra power to fight monsters. And then there's the fucking retarded character that is Emiru's brother. Instead of giving any logical reason to forbid Emiru from doing what she wants to do (wasting her potential, can't really help people), he quite literally goes "but you're a girl", in a franchise that not only is set in the present but is also 15 years old, using a character that is the same age as the main trio.
Personally Junichi Sato wasn't fit for the job. He sure can write shows with drama and little girls on them, but Precure isn't exactly a franchise known for its depth. It's animated tokusatsu with SoL elements and it revels on it.
