Just finished this, was wondering if anyone else has seen it and what you guys thought. I was drawn in by the premise, which seemed really dark and depressing, and instead I got a cheap rip-off of Usagi Drop. Anyone else have any thoughts?

Is that little loli there in the middle the father? If yes, I'm willing to listen.

It was cute. The little one in the middle was precious. The blonde was hot. I was reading Haruhi back when this was airing and couldn't help but think of main girl as a bad discount Haruhi.

>the premise, which seemed really dark and depressing

Even if the premise seemed dark, you could tell by the promo art that it wasn't going to be a dark anime. It was mostly just a SoL show, and it was fine. I would've liked if they did something with the barebones romance subplots, but they didn't, again not very surprising, especially since it was a 12-episode advert-adaptation.

Read it up on wikipedia, sounds like wolf children with less suffering.

It seemed like they didn't really do anything with any of the plot points. The MC might as well have been babysitting the kids and it would've played out mostly the same. I didn't read the manga so I don't know if it's much different, but it just felt weird to have such a dark premise and then sort of side-step it entirely.

If anything, it's a different SoL show than what you'd usually get.

I watched it after aggressively seeking out imouto related content after watching Yosuga no Sora. My memories are fuzzy but largely positive. The combination of incest undertones and a family life dynamic was superb, but it was hampered by its sub par execution. The OVA where they skip forward a few years and reveal that brown hair ended up winning stuck me as odd but was appreciated nonetheless. Overall a pretty good show.

>a cheap rip-off of Usagi Drop

what gave you the impression of Usagi Drop? Other than that it involves a young girl I don't see the similarity.

>what gave you the impression of Usagi Drop? Other than that it involves a young girl I don't see the similarity.

I went in to the show looking for a sad story, and the premise seemed sad enough. I wasn't even thinking of Usagi Drop at first, but I can't help but compare the two for a variety of reasons.

First is how they deal with the death of the parent(s). Obviously the two shows differ in how that happens, but the aftermath is very similar. Both MCs are somewhat distant and don't know the kid(s) well/at all. The older family members are non-commital and want something easy for them. The feeling for me here was the same in both shows, basically powerless kids who are forced to go along with anything that is decided for them.

Second was the MCs grappling with the responsibilities of suddenly becomming a parent. This is where I think Usagi Drop shines and this show kinda flounders. Daikichi changes his life a lot and learns to live more selflessly. Yuuta doesn't change anything and basically pushes off a lot of responsibility onto the older daughters which I saw as unfair. Even though he's "helping" them by keeping them together, he's running the older two ragged and they begin to have problems which he ignores.

Third is many of the character interactions that occur within the show. Both Daikichi and Yuuta rely on outside help to raise the kid(s). Daikichi Receives help from other parents while Yuuta gets help from other people his age. Daikichi learns from other parents and figures out how to go about raising Rin. Yuuta just kinda gets lucky that people think HIna is cute and cut him breaks.

They are two different shows, but I couldn't help thinking of Usagi Drop while watching this one. I guess I wanted a little more cold, hard reality in this show that I just wasn't going to get. I still enjoyed it, but the mix of the depressing premise and serious responsibilities of raising kids always seemed to clash with the comedy of the show and I don't think it worked all that well. And then when reality did creep in (Yuuta getting kicked out of his apartment or having to work a lot to support them), the show just kinda skipped over the details and made everything work out.

I guess no one really cares to talk about this show or remembers it. One last bump I guess in case there is an anon out there who has some input.

Also I was thinking of the premise and the idea that this guy basically kidnapped all three kids and nothing happened with that aspect of the show always stuck with me. I mean, he isn't really related to any of them except Hina. I'm not sure what Jap law is like in situations like this, but I imagine he doesn't really have a legal foot to stand on. But all of the grandparents kinda just let him take the kids. I kept expecting the cops to show up or something but it was like the grandparents were just glad to be rid of the kids completely. Maybe I'm wrong and he actually had some kind of legal authority to stand on but I doubt it.

This show seems to pursue the "raising a family" feeling without really knowing how to do it. The writer has probably never been around kids or knows anything about child raising. They just wanted a cute boy meets girl not quite incest story with little sister feeling. UsagiDrop is the opposite as it shows a more realistic style of story likely because the author knows a lot more about it. Don't worry about legal stuff in Papakiki, its all swept away because its not cute.

i just can't help but think it could have been so much more than it was. Ultimately I didn't see the point in killing off the parents, since that's so fucking depressing. Imagine if the parents just get stranded at a remote destination and stayed in touch to say they couldn't get back home for 6 months. The plot would essentially be the same, young guy is suddenly forced into a fatherly role. I actually think it would've worked better, because it would have forced the MC to be closer with his sister and her family, and it would have instilled a new feeling of care and compassion within the MC. It's kind of established that he is trying to be more independent of his sister early on, while she wants him in her life along with her husband and kids.

>it could have been so much better

I've gotten very used to feeling this in regards to anime with very specific premises. All of the criticisms you make are very on point, and I also feel that it would have been great had it been better. Ultimately though I suppose that's the cost of getting niche content; it doesn't have much budget or competition to beat.

Only somewhat related, but I had a very long and autistic discussion with an /a/non about Yosuga no Sora about a year ago, and for all of our discussing of the show's pros and cons and so forth, the only conclusion (actually related to the show) that seemed to be shared between both of us is that it was a crying shame there wasn't more of it, and that what we did have wasn't better done than it actually was. That's the state of liking content like YnS or this show, there's hardly any of it so it's like you're being drip fed water. You catch an oreimo here, a YnS there, and find papa no iukoto and your thirst is momentarily slaked but not gone. But there is no more, so you only end up wandering an endless desert in pursuit of the feels that shows like these give you.

After a while, one wonders what the point is.

Maybe I ought to give this show a rewatch and see if it's any different in my eyes now.

I always considered Yuri from Angel Beats as the Costco Haruhi, but I do see the resembalance.

I haven't re-watched this in ages, but I do still have it available. There's more story here than meets the eye to anyone who hasn't seen it, but wants to make it seem like they have, just to criticize. Same thing happened to Kodomo no Jika and, Shuffle!, more or less.

I'll get this into my re-watch queue.
