Let me preface this by clarifying that I am huge sucker for classical fantasy settings such as this. I've always been into fantasy novels and role-playing games. I used to play tabletop dungeons and dragons a ton like 9 years ago back when I willingly sought out social interaction with humans. I would always ALWAYS play rogue characters so this definitely contributed to my enjoyment of Hai to Gensou no Grimgar. (The main character is a rogue)

Alright, let's start with the bad. Overall characterization in this is poor and most of the cast is very bland as well as unlikable. The best and most developed characters are Mari and Haruhiro. Maybe the rest of the cast gets better treatment in the source material (which I will hopefully read eventually). This series was only 12 episodes, disappointingly. Which is a reasonable excuse for poor characterization. To their credit, the plot was self-contained and loose ends were wrapped up well. However, I think I would have enjoyed a 24 ep series much more with more character development and richer world building. I also didn't really like the character designs. Except for Mari- her hair is so pretty!! god I wish I was Mari

Both the OP and ED were composed of panning stills. Very lazy. When I watched episode 1 I thought it was a production issue that they'd update with something better (I was wrong).

This is a matter of personal opinion, but I really did not like the OST. Music is a major part of this anime. It is used very frequently, not just during action scenes but frequently vocal songs are played in the background while the characters talk. A diverse array of vocal songs are played often. The problem is that it is all j-rock. Personally I don't like rock as a genre, and generally I found that it was totally unsuitable for the setting. Would have preferred a totally different style of OST. That said, some of the background nonvocal stuff was nice.

Some of the VAs in this were pretty good. Haruhiro's voice was really nice. tfw no leatherclad rogue bf

Alright, what's the best thing about this anime? The background art (not character design). The setting looks absolutely gorgeous. EVERY FRAME looks amazing. I was pausing all the time just to admire the art. Huge enjoyment was derived from this. It reminds me of watercolour paints which I used to use a lot.

Like I said before, I'm a huge sucker for classical fantasy role-playing worlds. If you are too then you will probably enjoy this. My personal enjoyment was 8/10, but a neutral perspective might be lower than that.

Nice blogpost, but I like the series too so I'll bite.

>I am huge sucker for classical fantasy settings

It's an isekai though.

You should, because the anime is kind of a joke. It was clearly made on a shoestring budget and pretty half-heartedly as one of those glorified adverts for the LN. The LN is the real heart of the series, and it's a wild ride. The character designs are also a bit more interesting in the LN, if only because the artist who does all the art has a pretty uncommon style. I wouldn't call it good, but it does make it stand out.

I should add that J-novel club's licensed release of the LN is actually really good and respects the source material and doesn't dumb down the references to Japanese culture and language at all. It's say it's even worth paying for.

>LN advert

I figured this was the case

I already downloaded the jap and english version

J-novel club's TLs tend to be pretty good because they respect the language and source material, and they leave fan translations up/don't send DMCAs until they have finished the corresponding parts of a translation in question creating competitive fan translations to stay ahead of where they are, yeah. Now if only they weren't fucking kikes with their CR-tier "subscription and then buy" service method, I might even call them a respectable company.

Yeah, I totally agree with that. Especially any shot of the town was beautiful. Maybe I should re-watch it at some point, just to save some screenshots.

The series itself was a weird mix of game mechanics and "realism", that needs some degree of suspension of disbelief to get into but I found it enjoyable.

Though it was one of those series that I really don't think it needed to be an isekai, at least not from an anime-only perspective. It might as well have been about two groups of young villagers that went to that town in order to become adventurers. The isekai aspect doesn't add much to the seires, especially since they forgot all about their old lifes.

The isekainess gets brought up more in the LN as the series goes on.

The isekai backstory was so unobtrusive though, so I was fine with it for a 12 episode series.

I feel like any other backstory would require so much more time to develop

 No.897346

Does anybody know where to pirate the officially translated LN?

The day breakers have cellphones that they use as magical communicators and give one to haruhiro and they're trying to figure out where they came from and how to properly revive the dead. Eventually, like a long ways off, the story will be about going home.

jcafe24 has all of it.

>>897318

Not liking haruhiro is a sin, the LN is basically a beta/omega trying to take on the role of leader.

 No.897555

I just finished the anime the other day, but I liked this series. Like Konosuba but not retarded.

Ill be looking into getting the LNs. While the visuals and music are what really made me love the anime, I can totally get into a story about a bunch of betas trying to make it in an isekai world.

>>897336

I had about 150 screenshots by the time I finished.

As for the realism part, I liked how getting news skills required them to actually train instead of "you now know Kung Fu"

 No.898578

I enjoyed it up until the meme betrayal it was too game-like cliche of plot and I was too slow-paced also.
